Hello and anyone on here use a fram extended guard or tough guard or ultra oil filter? What do you think of them? I know the FRAMS get beaten to death here. I have used some Fram tough guards in my time, think I have a ancient FRAM without the grippy stuff on it for the Chevy truck somewhere.

thanks in advance, and I dont care to hear fram bashing also.

Nothing wrong with a Fram filter as long as you do not push it past 6-7k miles. Should do fine. I used the OCOD for years and changed oil every 3-4k miles and never had a problem with the engines.

The orange cans are really just fine for a 3-5K OCI, millions of people have been using them for years with no problem. The biggest problem with them is there are better quality filters available for the same or less money so they aren't a very good value.

The FRAM Ultra is a different story though. Very good quality filter available for less than other comparable filters, so it's a great value.

Wouldn't go out of my way to get one, but I have used many throughout the years without any problems.

IMO, they are overpriced and there are better options for the same money or less.

cummins has a tsb on this filter advising it to not be used due to it failing and putting debris in the engine and clogging things like piston cooling jets. This was from a long time ago so I don't know if they changed the design, but as far as I know they still have cardboard endcaps so probably not.

I've used many Frams over the years and can't say anything bad about them.
There may be better built filters for the same money or less when comparing the basic low-end offerings, and my current oil filter stash consists entirely of Puro Classic/P1/D+ filters.
Still, at the right price for shortish drain intervals, there is no problem with the basic orange can.
The higher end Fram oil filters look to be pretty well made.
Fram hate seems to be a mob thing here, with no rational basis for most posters.
Fram love, OTOH, seems to be limited to one guy living in the great white north.
I'm kind of glad that we have at least one Fram fanboy here.
Frams are not nearly as bad as they are sometimes made out to be, and most of those posting about how awful they are have no more real knowledge or experience than the guy whose signature supports the orange can.

running an ultra xg8a on my cherokee. has the best functioning antidrainback valve of any filter I have used. with all the others, I could hear the oil draining back to the pan after shutting it off.it also doesn't take as long to build oil pressure on startup, so it starts much quicker. it does seem somewhat restrictive.

I've used an Ultra. Great filter, but I still wish they used a metal bypass valve instead of the same plastic one that goes in the low-end filters. I worry about plastic becoming brittle during extended drains. I'll use Ultra's again in the future for non-extended drain, though.

I still wouldn't run a ToughGuard or ExtraGuard on my worst enemy's car.

Ran my car 236K on 6k oci with Fram except for the times I cheaped out with a Wal-Mart filter. No problems. Manual on new Ford says there can be clattering on startup with certain filters. So I will be a sport and pay the extra seventy-five cents for a Motorcraft filter.

Not when Motorcraft filters are within pennies of the price of the OCOD.

They make it as cheap as Super-Tech used to be? Sure why not? My Mazda gets changed every 5K whether it needs it or not

What makes you think is seems more restrictive? If the oil pressure seems to build quicker, then it's probably less restrictive.

ZeeOSix I agree with you. I am sick of these gratuitous "FRAM OCOD's are great" posts. I'm an engineer and I don't see it at all. From my perspective, it is a mediocre, although functional product, priced higher than it should be. (I am entirely excluding Fram Ultra from this. I believe it is a very good product and very good value.) So all you OCOD lovers... Tell us why you think the Orange can is the best value for your money. Go ahead. Make well thought out, reasonable points and everyone here will acknowledge them (or at least not trash them). Regurgitate "pie in the sky platitudes" and we will eviscerate them. This is your chance. Put up or shut up.

I previously posted this response in another thread..."I have done HUNDREDS of LOF's using Fram or Defense filters which are made by Fram...never a problem. I have used Fram or Defense exclusively for the past 12 years...never a problem. I just recently put on a NAPA ProSelect 21522 for the first time ever (see sig.) because there was one on the shelf next to the Fram's. Guess I've been BITOG'D!"

But did you cut every one of those filters open for inspection to verify there really wasn't a problem (ie, torn media, bad ADBV, bad by-pass valve, etc). An engine will run fine for thousands of miles and still seem like there aren't any problems going on while the oil is slowly wearing out the engine.
