I ordered 4 Nokian Entyres 205/50R17 from amazon.
(my back Cooper RS3-A where about 3/8-4/8, still grippy for rain, but not good if any snow; pretty good for 31-32k miles)

about 70 a piece to my door.
will update with install costs.

P.S. should I have gone with 215/50R17? (for better pothole absorption?)

Depending on how wide your wheels are. I wouldn't put 215/50/17s on a wheel less then 7.5 inches wide.
On a 17x7" a 205/55/17 slightly taller than your 50s, would handle pot holes better.
Try 215/40/18 on a 18x8" wheel to loosen fillings. Not much sidewall on that size.

I'd recommend checking out Mazda 24/7 forums, specifically this URL:

My 5 is a Sport so has 16 inch wheels. My snows are same size as stock: 205/55/16. So can't comment on fitment of different size tire. I will say that Coopers are going in next and have been a pretty quiet tire but on a different vehicle. You mention that they were noisy in your experience. The thing is that in my experience Yaris (friend had one) and Mz5 are not very well sound proofed from the factory so that may be one of the reasons tires may seem noisier. I'm not a die hard Cooper Tire fan but overall CS5 Touring have been pretty good in 16 months/16K miles I've had them on a different vehicle (215/60/16 size). We'll see how they do on the 5 later this year.
