2014 Jeep GC gets a diesel engine

If this has already been posted, sorry. If not the 2014 GC will be getting as an option a 3.0L V6 Diesel engine. They are calling it the EcoDiesel. It's rated at 240 HP and 420lb-ft of torque, hooked up to an 8 speed AT. It makes more torque than the 5.7L hemi. Advertised mpg is 30. I'm guessing the sticker price for the diesel engine is going to be close to $4,000 more than the 3.6L Pentastar GC will be. It should be interesting to see how successful the engine is here in the US, and if the 2014 Wrangler will be offered the same way.
 
They should put that engine in a truck. Sort of just below a cummins or bigger diesel. I would buy one in a heartbeat. 420 foot pounds of torque and 30mpg. It could do everything my hemi does and get twice the mileage.
 
The numbers for the engine are impressive, I wonder how much extra $$ you'd have to pony up to own one.

If so then I'd probably opt for the 3.6L. Although I don't think Jeep would go with 2 diesel engines, would they?

The Liberty had a VM Motori diesel until US emissions laws forced it away. This one sounds a bit more potent... it would have to be to haul a Grand Cherokee around without being a sad sack compared to the Pentastar.

They gave it a 7,400lb tow capacity too. I fear buying the first year of anything new like this though.

MSRP is $4500 over the standard V6 pricing.

Even at 4000 extra,if it was in a ram,the extra cost up front would pay for itself in a couple years in fuel savings for me personally.
I can't justify buying a cummins. It's just way too much truck for my needs however an engine like this is compatible to the hemi as far as power but it gets 10 mpg better. That alone would bring me over to the diesel dark side.
The only apples to apples comparison would be the ford turbo sixxer. Over 30mpg and roughly 400lbs torque. I'm not a diesel guy but I could be brought around.
 
There was a diesel Liberty.
Maybe three or four were actually sold in this country.
Had it been a marketing success, the diesel would have remained available.
Diesels have never been big sellers in light duty vehicles in this country.
I think that the poisoning of the market following the GM diesels offered in various displacements in various cars is largely a thing of the past.
This engine option is interesting, although the current price spread between diesel and unleaded regular means that any operating cost savings will be illusory.
 
It appears to be only offered in the Limited and higher packages (again). I'd probably get one in a Laredo, but a diesel Grand Cherokee in the higher packages is going to run $40k+. Boooo.

I'd bite if I could get one in a 4x4 Laredo without getting too far from $30k.

Me as well. Not only is the entry point too high but the cost of diesel fuel is so much higher than regular gas here( almost 90 cents a gallon )that it really isn't much of a savings over a gas vehicle even at 30 MPG. Also, at least in my state, registering a diesel vehicle is outrageously expensive. The taxes on it KILL you.

I think it needed a few more years on the market. I think it was literally only 1 or 2 years before it got forced out by emissions rule changes.

Right now, the cost of diesel fuel is also suppressing demand for diesel vehicles. With regular at 3.29 and diesel at 3.89 (more expensive then premium gasoline), it takes a BIG mpg advantage for a diesel to win. Throw on DEF and/or EGR headaches and DPF problems, diesels have more of a liability than an advantage at the moment. They're kinda where gasoline catalytic convertor systems were in 1977... not quite soup yet.
