I'm sure the Subaru engineers designed it to not cause dirt to get into the engine. The mount for the filter is up above the dish, and it probably has a drain nipple on it too.
 
You can fill an oil filter half way and let the paper element absorb the oil so there is some oil at start up. I really LOVE this oil filter location !!!!!

Does the 2012 Impreza use a timing belt or chain ?

The FB series engine in the Impreza and Forester uses a timing chain. The '93-2011 Impreza uses a belt that had to be replaced at 60k originally in the 2.2L, then went to 105k when they put the 2.5L in it.

They're not much of a pain to do (engine faces the right way

), but the belt is expensive-think $100 or so.

I do like the new location as well-I think if you loosen the filter a bit, it should start to flow back down the tube IMHO (could be wrong here).

Then again, this is just going to screw with the Jiffylube knuckleheads...
 
If the adbv holds up, shouldn't be much of a problem. If it doesn't, that could be royally messy job.
