Wanted to add another bike in the garage and found this -83 GS1000G with about 53000 kilometers (about 33k miles) within reasonable distance.
Bike has been sitting for the past five years so there is a bit of maintenance work to be done but nothing major.
First thing was to change all fluids and pull the valve cover to check and adjust clearances. Was quite relieved to see nice and clean valvetrain.
After clearance adjustments (shim over bucket) and new plugs I got it running quite easily. Unfortunately #4 idle circuit seems to be plugged so carbs need to come off and serviced. Otherwise nothing out of the ordinary.
I'm taking the bike tomorrow to this guy who did my -83 Katana's carbs some 10 years ago. After he has done his bit and GS is running as it should it needs new tyres as the Metzelers are over 10 years old. Will get Bridgestone BT46s as those are on my EFE too and they feel very good.
The nice bonus is that this has been inspected by specialist and has received "historical vehicle" (=old) status and vehicle insurance is just 33,- Euros per year.
I was a young buck when these were introduced and couldn't even afford to dream about these. But here we are, only took me 40 years.
