I guess I have higher aspirations.Better fuel economy is a good thing. If you can hit 300K on 0w20 and get better fuel economy doing it...why not?

The issue is not wear but at limit protection.I believe we get lost in the weeds at times in these threads.
There is NO question that a reasonably thicker oil than recommended protects better, and that the changes made to the EA888 don't limit you to 508.00. But none of this says these cars won't be long lived and reliable on 508.00.
Lower viscosity oils are no doubt for better MPG. But just like the "thick" crowd always says the difference is marginal at best, the same can also be said for wear between the two, "marginal". Now, those that prefer a more viscous oil might say they'll take marginally better wear any day. There is nothing wrong with that either. But your preference doesn't discredit someone else's stance that their use of the manufacturer recommended oil is a fine choice.
Little of which would be due to the oil. By you, an unmeasurable amount.Been running my 2019 Passat 2.0 liter on 508 oil since I bought it more than 28 months ago. No issues but GREAT gas mileage. See no reason not to use the 508 oil!

350k? PfftBut that same thinking could be applied to engine wear under normal usage. If a 0w20 oil engine goes 300k and a 5W30 engine goes 350k, do we really know it was the oil?![]()
No we don’t. But that is not the point. Vehicles like GTI are bought to have fun. They are by definition high performance hatchbacks and a lot should be demand from an engine. But that same thinking could be applied to engine wear under normal usage. If a 0w20 oil engine goes 300k and a 5W30 engine goes 350k, do we really know it was the oil?![]()
I already have the car tuned and will use 0w20 while monitoring oil temps. If they go over 230 ill switch to a vw504.
What for and Why would vw use 0w20 if it weren't suitable? Not my car but I thought a discussion could expand on VW's choice to run a lighter oil.
At the Mk 7 forum a new owner is reporting his new ‘19 GTI specs 508 00 oil. This is a 0w-20 oil similar to so the FE formulation from BMW and 229.71 from Daimler.
The engine is rated at a tad more power (228hp) vs previous years(220hp) but no other changes are known to the internals.
Would you run this difficult to find oil or just run the existing 502 00 spec?
If it were my car I would buy the easy to find Castrol 0w-40.
I do agree with the 5w30 504 00 oils being great middle of the road between the 508 0w20 and the 5w40s. I should have 5k miles on the clock by summer so a few UOA with 0w20 will shed some light on thisI'd almost bet it will slightly exceed 230°F on a hot summer day
depending on elevation.
That said I'd put UOA money into an early oil change regardless
if you prefer running VW 508 00 or 504 00. I do trust 5w30 more
though I don't actually 'fear' running a 0W-20. It's just that I got
the choice and so I'll opt for the more stout alternative any day.
.
5K on the car or the oil? 5K on the car, a UOA won't tell much (if anything) other than the wabbit is still "breaking in".I do agree with the 5w30 504 00 oils being great middle of the road between the 508 0w20 and the 5w40s. Plus the inescapable fact that a UOA tells you little about the oil.5K on the car or the oil? 5K on the car, a UOA won't tell much (if anything) other than the wabbit is still "breaking in".
