‘19 GTI specs 0w-20 508 00

I believe we get lost in the weeds at times in these threads.

There is NO question that a reasonably thicker oil than recommended protects better, and that the changes made to the EA888 don't limit you to 508.00. But none of this says these cars won't be long lived and reliable on 508.00.

Lower viscosity oils are no doubt for better MPG. But just like the "thick" crowd always says the difference is marginal at best, the same can also be said for wear between the two, "marginal". Now, those that prefer a more viscous oil might say they'll take marginally better wear any day. There is nothing wrong with that either. But your preference doesn't discredit someone else's stance that their use of the manufacturer recommended oil is a fine choice.

Point taken. And well said. Truth is any of my current vehicles run on whatever oil I have chosen will probably outlast me. Same can be said for others out there running whatever they choose. Happy Motoring.

The issue is not wear but at limit protection.
VW recommends 0W20 anticipating certain type of exploitation.
Same like they recommend VW504.00 in Europe bcs. they anticipate different exploitation.
I run 5W30 in Sienna although 0W20 is recommended. But i drive Sienna in pretty much same fashion as other cars where oil temperatures exceed 240f very often. Like you said, question is what matters more? 0.4mpg or potential damage to piston rings?

But that same thinking could be applied to engine wear under normal usage. If a 0w20 oil engine goes 300k and a 5W30 engine goes 350k, do we really know it was the oil? 😁
No we don’t. But that is not the point. Vehicles like GTI are bought to have fun. They are by definition high performance hatchbacks and a lot should be demand from an engine.
VW and other European manufacturers recommend for European markets heavier oils as speeds are higher etc. I the US they don’t. But that doesn’t mean that some buyers don’t drive it hard.
When someone buys GTI I expect they drive it like GTI is intended to be driven.
That is why I am not thrilled by these oils. Great mpg? If that is goal, there are much better vehicles out there. Prius? EV’s? Etc.

I think it comes down to the engine will last well beyond the warranty period and into 100k miles.
Will 5w30 vw spec 504 make it last 300k vs 0w20 508 that will only last 200k. probably not.
The gti makes decent power stock but really its nothing crazy.
Mercedes specs the Amg Cla 45 with 0w20 and it makes more power than a golf R by almost 100 HP lol.
My Gti Rabbit was one of the first Gti's in the US to be specced with 0w20.
My 2022 Mk8 Gti has the same sticker under the hood "use 0w20 AND vw508 "
I already have the car tuned and will use 0w20 while monitoring oil temps. If they go over 230 ill switch to a vw504.
Maybe ill do some uoa after break in and see how the 0w20 is doing

I'd almost bet it will slightly exceed 230°F on a hot summer day
depending on elevation.
That said I'd put UOA money into an early oil change regardless
if you prefer running VW 508 00 or 504 00. I do trust 5w30 more
though I don't actually 'fear' running a 0W-20. It's just that I got
the choice and so I'll opt for the more stout alternative any day.

Not my car but I thought a discussion could expand on VW's choice to run a lighter oil.

At the Mk 7 forum a new owner is reporting his new ‘19 GTI specs 508 00 oil. This is a 0w-20 oil similar to so the FE formulation from BMW and 229.71 from Daimler.

The engine is rated at a tad more power (228hp) vs previous years(220hp) but no other changes are known to the internals.

Would you run this difficult to find oil or just run the existing 502 00 spec?

If it were my car I would buy the easy to find Castrol 0w-40.
What for and Why would vw use 0w20 if it weren't suitable?

I do agree with the 5w30 504 00 oils being great middle of the road between the 508 0w20 and the 5w40s. I should have 5k miles on the clock by summer so a few UOA with 0w20 will shed some light on this

5K on the car or the oil? 5K on the car, a UOA won't tell much (if anything) other than the wabbit is still "breaking in".

I agree, if it's 5000 on the car and still the initial fill the UOA(s)
will likely 'reveal' nothing new. Somewhat raised Fe, Al, Si and
in particular Cu numbers are normal. No magic oil will change
anything on that, only frequent short interval changes would.
Remember the cylinder head, block, oil cooler and oil pan will
retain almost one quart of old oil at any change.
