Not to be cocky, but I venture to guess that Ive gotten farther than most in my class, and so Id like to sport the fact that Im doing well, without being showy, show-offish, or rude in any way. What I mean is that I want to look sophisticated and professional, without overdoing it to any extreme.

Any suggestions? I look forward to meeting up with a lot of folks that I knew back in the day, but I dont want to look ridiculous one way or another.

Thanks,

JMH

Events like this are for showing off lol. I'm only average with my career but while all the jocks in school are now fat and bald, I've grown a foot and 200lbs cut. I loved going to my 10 yr reunion 2 years ago.

My favorite attire for something like this is a fairly expensive pair of Diesel jeans, a black sport jacket, and a fitted white long sleeve shirt. Top button unbuttoned and cuffs unbuttoned. If the shirt is fitted correctly, you can pull off having it untucked without looking sloppy. Plenty formal, not sloppy; yet fun, sporty and not boring.

Then there's the do you want the 5-o-clock shadow or clean shaven look. And to top off my insanity, cut your fluids slightly and sodium completely during the day so your face looks more defined.

OK, thanks everyone. Obviously I didnt get my words onto the screen well enough though...

Effectively, Ive never been to an HS reunion, my wife, younger than I obviously has not either. Both of our parents have not been to their tenth since the mid-70s to early 80s, so that isnt a very good indicator either.

We wont be driving... likely... it is in an area with good public transit access, so likely we'll try to take the train.

As for dress and looking "presentable", I guess that was my issue... what is "presentable" for a reunion? I dont want to dress too casual, but I tend to overdress... then again, since perceptions are what run wild at these things (Id guess), I dont want to look like Im overdoing it either.

And the point that the folks worth keeping up with, I have, is a good one... But as I said above, for the rest of the folks, who many I DO care to see, but likely wont see for another ten years, perception is likely all that will come of it, as likely most conversations will be very superficial and not worth much. Doesnt mean I dont want to see them... it just means that I kind of feel as if since first impression is worth everything, I want to do it right so that feel stupid or feel like Im overdone.

Since Im going into this completely clueless, and its really hard to put my thoughts down without coming across totally cocky or like a buffoon... its even tougher.

I greatly appreciate the replies.

Best,

JMH

This post sounds a lot more like the JMH we are used to.

I'm surprised that the invitations haven't given some general outlines as to what is expected. One of my reunions had three events over three days, and the three basic styles that I consider to exist - slacks (or kakis) and nice shirt(polo or buttoned, tie optional), suit, and jeans/shorts. Pardon me if this seems really basic, but if you are really worried, the middle path will make sure you are in the ballpark.

Perhaps the culture in your area and school is different, but at mine, which was lower middle class, people didn't, as far as I know, pay that much attention to what was worn. We remembered personalities well enough to guess who would be a little outlandish, a little conservative, etc, and besides that, it wasn't a big issue.

In my experience, the first reunion is great in that people are now old enough to know who they are, and they can perhaps establish new real relationships instead of the superficial ones they had as kids. I remember a couple of meetings that were like confessions (I was always intimidated by you, I cheated to read more books than you, etc). Now you have the safety and perspective to look back and laugh.

It will be everyone elses first reunion too, so they will have the same apprehensions as you. Be concerned about being yourself, enjoying yourself, and appreciating other people, and people will appreciate you. That's all you need to know...

I agree with TooManyWheels. Dress whatever is comfortable for the culture in your area. Justins, Wranglers, and a Stetson wouldn't have been out of place at my reunion, in fact it would have been "dressed up", I'll bet it isn't very common in NJ though.

The other thing to keep in mind is everyone else there is in the same predicament you are. If you want to wear a suit and tie you won't be the only one. If jeans are not typically worn as "nice" in your area then don't wear them. I wouldn't wear a tux though.

Dark slacks with a botton shirt and dark blazer can be modded up or down, depending on what everyone else is wearing. If everyone else is wearing a suit, you can add a tie and pass for being similar. If people are wearing jeans or kakis, leave the blazer and the tie over the back of your chair.

You could use some Mary Kay.

Fashion tips for BITOGers. Who's manly enough to wear capri pants at his homecoming?

My 20th reunion is coming up. I have two choices.

1. Come alone and bring the daily driver.
2. Bring the Lambo and my 23 y/o gf.

Is #2 likely to cause hostility? lol

If you don't go with #2, I'll be hostile.

If any of your classmates has any doubt about how far you've come, just take your iPhone along with you, and let them view your BITOG posts. That should remove any doubt.

As a sales intro, the Amsoil filter guru recommended "taking a filter to lunch". Perhaps as a social aid..just to break the 10year ice, you could bring a quart of your favorite oil and just sit it next to you at the table/bar. It's assured to spark up some conversations. A few folders with details of your favorite posts here on BITOG might be good hand outs.
