Most local miles/ 25% Interstate/ hard acceleration from stops always/ frequent "fast" episodes for 1 mile intervals on Interstate. Changed personally to M1 0W40.

NOTE: My other GTI (same specs) had 10ppm Fe after only 12 miles on dealer OC @ 2514. That was on bulk VW part no. oil. I dropped that oil out then as I figured it had not been changed completely as it was as black as used oil. I was suspicious as they had overbilled my wife for 2 qts. Female and white hair, I suppose.

I have a couple gls of the RL 5W40 but am waiting for test on these two oils before I use it.

Aack ... do not use M1 0W-40 in this engine, unless you want to have the highest wear of all 502 oils!!!

VW factory oil is most likely a 5W30.

LubroMoly 5W-40 is about the best 502 approved oil for this application.

Amsoil European Formula 5W-40 is a much better oil for this application. It is "recommended" for VW 502 applications.

Renewable Lubes BioSyn 5W-40 will probably perform even better, and IMO should be recommended if you are going to keep your car for 100K miles or greater.

I posted the UOA as a "match" for the other GTI post. I'll check them a 2k point. My wife's will be a disaster since she does short mileage. I blow it out on the weekend but it is still very severe service. If I decide to keep them, I'll try to find an oil that will go beyond 3k.

I have the RL 5W40, as I said. Probably put it in one of them on next change. I wanted to compare M1 to the Syntec.
I usually don't keep vehicles very long but may want to keep one of these. They are handy and have fairly good acceleration.

I followed your thread on the FSI Audi oil situation.

My wife's is a 6 month OCI - fall & spring - simply because of the low mileage short trips. Engine killer in winter and not good anytime.

Looks fine for factory fill. Insolubles are on the high side for the mileage but not bad considering it's factory fill.

Preventing deposits will probably be the biggest battle with this engine. High detergency/dispersancy and oxidative/thermal stability are key factors. M1 0W-40 does well in those areas. Keep an eye on the future insolubles measurements and if possible, the inside of a PCV hose.

This doesn't look bad at all considering it's the break in period. I agree that that factory fill is a 30weight. Probably 0w-30, which was common in the previous generation 1.8Ts.

The two problems with this engine based on previous UOAs is high wear and clogged PCVs that lead to high oil consumption. So you gotta find an oil that balances the two. I have no idea what to recommend but I am running Maxlife synthetic 5w30 in mine. The newer bottles no longer have the VW502-505.01 specs on them so once my stash runs out, I'll probably switch to Synpower 5w-40 and then get an oil analysis done to see if I need to switch to RLI.

For comparison's sake, here is a record of previous 2.0T FSIs UOAs that have been posted on bitog

Tnx -

Looks like W40 is translated to W30 fairly quickly in this engine. The Pentosynth at bit more noticeable than the M1. But, the Pento had less iron than M1 at same mileage and tad lower visco. Not same unit, of course.

Bit like reading tea leaves. Tossing the bones. Baring the kidneys and liver.

My other unit - identical - just 12 miles after dealer OC (2500 miles on unit) with bulk ZVW-352-540-S had SUS@210 of 65.7 and cST @ 100 of 11.8. W30 out of container?

Wish I could use 15W40 like Delo non-synth and use 6 month or 3k changes and forget about it. I miss my Cummins B engines!

I'm pretty sure these oils aren't 5W-40, if they are, they sheared down....the additive packs aren't dazzling. 505.01 lite.

M1 0W-40, probably a good OTC choice.

505.01, since it was designed with TDI's & soot in mind, are designed to shear down initially, then as the oil gets loaded with soot, it will come back to the original 5w40 "weight", instead of starting at 5w40, then get thicker and thicker with soot loading.

It seems most people with VWs switch to a thicker oil. Our 99 Jetta burned oil like a sieve using 5w30, but it seems to like Castrol 10w40. Seems to run overall better too. It completely stops the oil burning.

I think VWs seem to like the thicker oils. They all use 0w40 synthetics in Europe anyway.

BTW, don't follow the 10k OCI in the manual with this car if using conventional oil. Seems too lengthy a change interval. Our Jetta mandates a 10k mile oil change, but we do it every 5k with dino.

I agree with RI-RS4, who most likely still knows how to use a slide rule. :)

I'd never run a 0w-30,5w30 or 0w-40 in this motor, due to their consistently high fuel dilution. Even the Euro 5w-40's are marginal from the UOA's I've seen - I'd probably try a shear stable 10w-40 like the Amsoil Marine oil (HT/HS of 4.5 Cp). The certified NMMA/FC-W oils are tested in an outboard engine with 6% fuel dilution, which seems like a good match to the 2.0L/FSI.

I am using the Liqui Moly (Lubro Moly in the US) Top Tech 4200. What are your thoughts on this product? I was surprised that they say do not mix it with other commercially available oils.
