06 Ranger 2wd ext cab-seriously considering...

5-6 US would buy a pretty clean 2wd Ranger here, 1 in 10 will be a stick if you are lucky.

I'm not sure if it changed by 06 but when mine was built the rear doors were optional they do make it more convenient.

On the 3.0 the timing covers are a weak point. (the water passage leaks)
The moulded heater hoses are expensive, watch for kludge particularly where they "T".
There are several revisions to the PCV elbow, it is a common vacuum leak.
Coil packs can be an issue.
Cruise switches don't hold up well.
15" wheels good tires getting hard to find, people put the wrong size on them...

8.8 Diff is only common on 4x4 and 4.0. If it doesn't come with limited slip, options for the 7.5 are somewhat limited.

As mentioned, the front end is a weak point as well.

2 WD "EDGE" models have the torsion bar front suspension and raise ride height IIRC.

If I had any intention of towing, I'd be looking at a F150.
