    What happened to Rotella?

My Walmart has a full lineup of Rotella oil in stock. Quarts and gallons of 15W40 and 5W40. The local Murrays also has the 5W40 and 15W40 in gallons.

    When is flushing really needed?

Regular coolant changes negate the need to do flushes to clear out built up crud. I have always drained/refilled my radiators every 2-3 years. Doing it this way, I have never had to do a flush to clear out junk because there has never been any. Replacing the coolant regularly also helps to keep...

Found 3 gallons of SL 10W30 Rotella in the garage

LOL. It will be used in the lawnmower and snowthrower......not quite what Shell had in mind when they cracked it, but my little 4 cycles should last a lifetime with that oil in them.

Where are my group IV and V 502/505s at???

I don't know what "group" Castrol Syntec 5W40 falls into, but it meets VW 502/505 specs, along with other European specs. I get it at Autozone....usually on sale for 5qts with a K&N or Mobil 1 filter for $26-$29.

    Ouch, discusted AT toasted

There's only a couple of ways that crud got into your trans..........either from a external opening or from internal failure.

Should I Let a Sleeping Dog Lie?

I always change out old ATF without fear of losing the trans. I've changed out a lot of old ATF, the last one being a ~135K mile 87 GMC Jimmy (full size) with a 700R4 trans that appeared to have not had the pan touched since the truck left GM. I dropped the pan, cleaned the gunk out, changed the...

    ATF for VW 01M

VW rant to ensue. VW did make changing (and checking) the ATF a real pain. Changing the final drive lube is a real bear too as VW did not put a drain/fill plug on the differential part of the automatic transaxle-at least not that I'm aware of. That would've been too easy. And I still can't...

    Winter oil - 7.3L diesel

I have a feeling the 5W40 weight is eventually going to replace the 15W40 as the diesel standby. That is once people get past the "fear factor" of running a 5 instead of a 15.

Found 3 gallons of SL 10W30 Rotella in the garage

Cleared out my old oil supply and found 3 unopened gallons of SL rated Rotella. At one time I religiously used this in my Jeep, but haven't touched it in over a year now that I run Rotella 5W40 in it. Should I sell this stuff on ebay or should I just run it in the lawmower & snowthrower to use...

road rage, tailgating, and Big Vehicles

Road rage wouldn't exist if people knew how to drive. Some people just do not deserve to have a driver's license.

    VW oil list

I use Castrol Syntec 5W40 in my VW. The bottle says it is VW approved and my Autozone always stocks it, so I use it. I used Shell Rotella T 5W40 prior to finding the Syntec.

ATF, Torque Multiplication and Stall Speed

All converters waste energy with cold or hot fluid due to slippage. That all goes away when they go into lockup mode though. Lockup is the only time a converter is efficient due to the lack of slippage-fluid also runs slightly cooler too as a fringe benefit.

    Using anti-seize on transmission/diff plugs?

No need to use anything on drain plug bolts. Install them dry.

Best gear oil for a 94 Trans Am

Any high quality, synthetic 85W140 will work just fine. I prefer a thicker gear lube for greater shock protection/cushioning of the gears on hard launches.

New pan or add drain valve...

Just get the new pan with the plug in it. I went with a deep pan with plug and was glad I did. More fluid capacity and cooler running fluid were added benefits.

    ATF for VW 01M

I only use OEM VW ATF in my late model VWs and change it and the filter religously every 50,000 miles. Make sure you suck out that final drive lube as well...........
