With $15 rebate offer from Quaker State on its Q Torque synthetic oil I went to AAP yesterday and bought 12 quarts 9buy 1 get 1 free) of 5W20 because that was all they had. My 2003 Toyota Echo engine specifies for 5W30. Since Toyota now uses 5W20 on their 2007 model cars, I wonder if I can use the 5W20 on my Echo? If not, will it be OK to mix it with 5W40 oil on 1:1 ratio to achieve final 5W30?

Personally, I would mix it.

Oh, I forgot to say: I would mix it with 5-30, not 5-40.

I wouldn't bother mixing it at all, I'd run the 5w20 with confidence, especially in the wintertime when your oil temps won't be that high anyhow.

A lot of people fail to realize that the difference in viscosity between most 5w20s and most 5w30s is only about 1.5 cst at 100c. So it's not really a huge difference. And a lot of conventional 5w30s end up thinning out by almost that much anyhow.
