Can I use this in my 2007 S550 and 2007 S60R? $3.36 a quart. Mercedes owners manual says nothing about the specs but the label does say MB 229.3

This is an older oil. I'd use Leichtlauf High Tech 5W40 if you are using LM.

As TiGeo recommends, use Leichtlauf High Tech. It will be fine for that M273 in the Mercedes requiring 229.5. What does the Volvo manual call for?

Volvo says minimum GF-3, API SL and ACEA A1/B1.

Is the difference between Mercedes 229.3 and 229.5 just an extend OCI from 12K to 15K?
That is an ancient spec. Just use an acea c3 oil and you’re going to be just fine. Castrol Edge Euro will likely fit the bill better than most overpriced and middling quality brands.

Approvals are approvals...QS Euro 5W40 for the win here if brand isn't important.

You recommended Castrol as if it's any better than any other oil with the same approvals (QS). Cheapest oil with approvals wins in my book.
At least in India, castrol is ubiquitous and also competitively priced. Whatever other oil floats your boat and meets the spec your vehicle needs.
