Out of most everything we have what do we really need? The more gears there are the more opportunities the engine has to run in a sweet spot of the best M.P.Gs. and lowest emissions. That is the whole ball of wax these days is the C.A.F.E. standards and emissions.

And the more complicated, and more expensive they are, and the more prone they are to failure...and you can forget ever repairing one of these mega geared trannies as it would be less expensive to replace the vehicle...
