My son and his wife have a 2000 Saturn LS that they purchased from her Grandmother. It only has 50,000 miles on it. When it's running it runs great. But, about once a month it will not start. Starter turns over but it just won't fire up. When they try the next day it runs great again, for about a month. Any idea what the problem might be? It's got the 2.2 L 4 cylinder.

Wouldn't those throw a code? No CEL that I'm aware of.

If the computer sees zero RPMS it can just be thinking it's not cranking. Some are dumb like that.

Other times it's a super-temporary code, like GM OBI systems reporting a "code 12." You'll note the CEL on with engine not running, it's lit because "there aren't crank pulses right now."

The fix for many chip keys (passkey, passlock) of that era gm is to leave the key on for ten minutes then try cranking again.
