Tuned up the old Cougar. New fuel filter, Motorcraft plugs, and air filter. Just put in a new MAF sensor a few weeks ago too. Made a 250 mile road trip today with it and was pleased to get 26.6 m.p.g.

That's great mileage for a 4.6. I used to average 23 or so in my last mustang. Mostly driven freeway.

Hello, My friend has a 4.6 in his F-150. I wonder how the mileage compares? ..just curious.
I know a 4.6L to 5.4L comparison in the truck would be a smarter comparison. Kira

I can testify you don't want to tow/haul heavy loads with a 4.6-lots of 4000+ RPM on hills & not-good mileage. I've been able to squeeze 17 MPG out of it (the E-250 in my sig), but it requires flat 55 MPH back road running.

I had two F150s with the 4.6. A 97 4x2 and a 99 4x4.

The 97 averaged 17.5 mpg, and would turn in over 20 mpg pretty easily on the highway. It had 3.08 gears.

The '99 averaged 15.5 mpg, and could not hit 20 mpg to save its life. Exact same truck, just different gearing (3.55) and 4x4 drivetrain. Same tire size and body configuration. Literally handed in the build sheet from the 97 and said I want this but in a 4x4.

Most bulletproof engine I've ever run. Did its job without complaint. Heavy loads as mentioned were a lot of higher rev running, but the engine never complained.

I have a 2002 F-150 4.6 Super Cab 4X4 with an 8'bed and a large fiberglass cap. It has the 3.55 gears and a 5 speed manual transmission. Over the last 13 years it's averaged 13.3 to 16.9 mpg. It depends on the season and the type of driving involved, winter/snow or late spring/summer/early autumn.

I had a 96 Tbird with the 4.6L and 3.27 gears.

It would get 25mpg.

I had a 98 Jack Roush F150 with the 4.6L and it would get 14mpg with the 3.73 gears.
