I usually drive a WRX but lately I've been driving our 2006 Outback wagon with 151,000 miles. The H6 motor is great (and holds 7.5quarts of oil) but the transmission shifts are kind of "mushy."

Most owners stick with the OEM Subaru ATF fluid. Is there an aftermarket product that might make shifting any sharper?

I wouldn't.

Subaru ATF HP is usually the best performer in the 5EAT. And it is really easy to do a drain and fill.

You can try and do a level 2 reset on the TCU & ECU.

I just did it to our Forester XT after thinking it was the fluid and it seemed to help firm them back up a bit.

Basically it resets all adaptive parameters and relearns your driving.

If that's 150,000 miles on the original fluid, it's time to swap all the fluid out. Four rounds of drain and fills will get most of it.

Ya I didn't even think of that! Just make sure they also don't drain the front diff and not refill it. It happens a lot!
