There are people who say that ATF will clean out an engine well. And there are people that say ATF is just detergentless oil that does nothing.

Worthless old wives take. ATF has no special cleaning abilities.
It's just another one of those backyard mechanic tricks that never go away.

The notion of using ATF as a cleaner might have had some validity way back when, since some ATFs once contained whale oil, an ester.
Today, ATF is just a light oil with some friction modifiers for the clutches and little detergency, since the tranny fluid never sees the temperatures nor the combustion products that the engine oil sees.
