Not sure where you/your buddy read that? Chrysler does not call for semi synthetic in anything that I have ever seen. In the Challenger they call for conventional 5W30 in the V6 model, conventional 5W20 in the 5.7L HEMI model, and in the SRT 6.1L and 6.4L models they call for either 5W40 or 0W40 full synthetic.
If your buddy has an SRT model he actually HAS to run full synthetic to preserve his warranty. Conventional oil is not spec'd for the SRT models. If he has a regular 5.7L HEMI he can run synthetic no problem but he still has to change it within the max allowed for OCI( 6 months/6000 or 6 months/8000 depending on year ). There is no extra time/mileage allowed for if running synthetic.
2009 - Present Challenger oil spec's...
Conventional/Synthetic oil for the 2009-2012 5.7L = 5W20, API Certified w/Starburst, and meets/exceeds Chrysler MS6395
Synthetic oil for the 2009 6.1L = 0W40( 5W40 alllowed for ), API Certified SM or SM/CF, and meets/exceeds Chrysler MS10725
Synthetic oil for the 2010 6.1L = 5W40, API Certified w/ Starburst, and meets/exceeds Chrysler MS10725 and approved to MB 229.3 or MB 229.5
Synthetic oil for the 2011 6.4L = 5W40, API Certified w/ Starburst, and meets/exceeds Chrysler MS10725 and approved to MB 229.3 or MB 229.5
Synthetic oil for the 2012 6.4L = 0W40, API Certified SM or SM/CF *
* = oddly for the 2012 SRT model there is no mention of the oil used needing to meet the Chrysler MS10725 synthetic oil standard and they revert back to API SM oil?
