Well DUH! That's what happens when you're following too close or not paying attention.

"Following too close," seems half the drivers in our city don't know or care about following distance.

That's about correct!
About one-half drive the speed limit
About one-half want to drive above the speed limit.

Sooner or later, the driver going above the speed limit is going to encroach the rear bumper of the driver that's going the speed limit.
No Rocket Science there! My only irk is seeing the driver only doing the speed limit (or under), generally sits in the left lane of a two lane availability.
