I have Vonage Mobile (free) on my cell phone. With it I can make calls supposedly in HD quality using data rather than cell minutes. But assuming one does not have an unlimited plan, I wonder whether its cheaper to use up data or minutes?

I think it depends on who you are calling. Many of the plans these days have free mobile-to-mobile minutes. This feature has caused my 1400 minute family plan with rollover minutes to bank nearly 13,000 minutes this past year. If your plan has such a feature, it would be cheaper to use the minutes, unless you are connected via WiFi for most of the time, then the Vonage plan would be better.

I've used Tango, GrooVeIP and MagicJack for wifi calls. The problem with them is the bandwidth capability of the data connection. When I've tested them at home with a strong wireless and internet connection it's great, then when I use it in hotels it's so so.
