About a month ago, I went to Wal-Mart at about 1AM, spent about 90 minutes in the store loading up my cart with groceries and household good items. The cart was packed to the top. I went to the front of the store to checkout and found that there wasn't a single cashier on the lanes. They ALWAYS have at least one cashier on the lanes late at night, so I thought this was odd. They only had the six self checkout lanes open which was attended by a clerk that kept running from one malfunctioning machine to the next.
I asked the clerk if there were any cashiers available and she said no, they only had self checkout available. I advised her that I was not going to check myself out with 100 plus items, that would simply take forever. I advised her that if Wal-Mart was too cheap to have at least ONE cashier available for me to checkout, I would spend my $200 elsewhere. I left my fully loaded cart at the self checkout counter and left the store empty handed.
When I got home I contacted Wal-Mart corporate office and told them how they lost a sale due to the lack of a single cashier willing to help me. They don't care though.
In all honesty I don't think you would have been any slower than your average Wal-Mart cashier. Many of the ones I've encountered appear to be mentally challenged.
The scary thing being: I have found that the dude with Downs Syndrome is often FASTER than many of the rest!
Humor aside....I've seen a few folks that sadly have this condition but are gainfully employed. Often times the nicest people you'll ever meet. Many do indeed perform certain jobs BETTER than some "normal" employees.
