2001 Ford F-150 5.4L Triton V8
Out:
6 qts. RP HMX 5w-30 (4k on oil)*
RP filter
In:
6 qts. Castrol Magnatec 5w-20**
Fram Ultra filter
---
*Royal Purple themselves said on the jug that if you've never run RP HMX before that you should lower the OCI to (IIRC) something like between 3k and 5k - (sorry, I can't remember exactly). Anyway, I ran it 4k because of RP's recommendation. Yes, I do know that I could have probably run the oil much longer because it is synthetic - but I just wanted to stay on the safe side... Why? RP HMX's "Synerlec" has been claimed to do great things. Now, don't get me wrong; I'm not a brand loyal fellow, nor do I always believe marketing hype, but, just cut me some slack here, and understand I dumped it at 4k because of RP's recommendation for first time users of RP oil with Synerlec.
**I know I may have said here a few times something like "I'll probably always run 5w-30 because [etc.]"... But, I figured I'd give in and allow myself to run the 5w-20.
---
Other things to note (somewhat related to the above) are:
1. I just wanted to try Castrol Magnatec (CM), just because.
2. CM 5w-30 is a synthetic-blend; CM 5w-20 is full synthetic.
I wanted full synthetic, and when I was pondering about giving in to allow myself to use 5w-20... I figured, "Alright, I guess since the 5w-30 isn't full-syn, and the 5w-20 is... fine. I'll use it."
And that was that.
---
Last thing to note:
I friggin hate the oil filter location on my engine. It is a b**** to both put it on and take it off. Why in the world Ford thought putting the filter in a place where it's nearly impossible to get to is beyond me. But, I do what I do. And I love doing it anyway, despite the pain.
