Does this look like a problem to you guys? This is an old quart I found in friends shop and I transfered it to a larger jug and did not pour into the engine. I did not see any Sludge transfer during the pour. I cracked the seal when spinning cap off, but these bottles do not have a foil seal on them.

I might shake it up and use it, assuming it meets the required spec. That bottle looks really old and some modern vehicles have a very particular oil specification.

Shake it up really well & throw it in the lawnmower but I'd not run it in anything but a worn out rust bucket vehicle. SM was a bit ago.

What would make an API SM oil so inappropriate here that you'd only use it in a "worn out rust bucket"? Technical reasoning please.

I've gotten myself into the habit of shaking the bottle before use. It seemed to be worse with Pennzoil but I believe it was mostly due to the yellow colored jugs so that you could easily see the dark spots of the additive which fell out of suspension. SM ended around 2010 and would work in everything that I have.
