Mobil 1 0W-40 or GC 0W-30 for Northeast Winters?

Here in Anchorage, where mean Jan low is +9F. but it can possibly range down towards -30F., so far M1 0W40 seems noticebly looser than dealer supplied 5W30. Car is not garaged.

Even at 0C, M1 0W-40 is only 5% more viscous than Total 0W-30. That's the benefit of a high VI.

Does anybody know if Total Quartz contains fully synthetic Group IV or group III or other mixed group base oils ?

What difference in mpg did you see exactly ?
