Helix Ultra:

Specifications and approvals

Because lubricants vary in quality, universal criteria are used to describe oil performance and usage. Shell Helix motor oils not only meet these increasingly demanding international specifications but usually surpass them. Shell Helix Ultra exceeds these specifications:

5W-40 Viscosity grade. API SN/CF; ACEA A3/B3/B4; BMW LL-01; MB approval 229.5; VW 502 00/505 00; Porsche A40; RN0700; RN0710; Ferrari; Meets the requirements of Fiat 9.55535-Z2
5W-30 Viscosity grade. ACEA A3/B3/B4; BMW LL-01; MB approval 229.5; VW 502 00/505 00; Meets the engine test requirements of API SN/CF

Which is which? Ultra, Ultra E, Ultra Extra...

What's the rage about this oil? It's just group 3 at best (msds says highly refined mineral oil, no grp IV or V). Moderate phos/zinc levels. 3.68 HTHS....nothing special for the price. Well, in Australia anyway, its ~65 for 5L here.

I guess it depends on the price, the cheap-o-mart here sells it for 29.90€/5l which makes it the cheapest MB 229.5-spec meeting oil. Viscosity index is good at 179 and it has several manufacturer approvals.
The group 3 vs 4 thing is kind of irrelevant as most if not all other 5w-40 oils are also group 3 base (Redline and Motul being the exceptions).

Maybe the Ultra 0w-40 has PAO as it costs about the same as Mobil 1 0w-40.
