How to make a motor smoother?

I knew someone a long time ago tied a rope several times around the engine and frame. It did not work, so don't try that.

I think the vehicle is operating properly as far as shifting schedule.

If anything, the engine mounts are tired and are not isolating vibrations from the chassis properly.

IDK if they are fluid filled, but if they are, then my thoughts on that increase-- they may have become deflated/leaked out over time, moreso losing their isolation.

But, this is all entirely armchair speculation. It could be that the car came that way new and just operates this way.

Does this engine have adjustable valve lash?
It's time for a compression test.

The only thing that seemed to have made the idle better (but not the vibration in the 1,000-2,000rpm range) is replacing the EGR solenoid. I then have tried blocking the EGR all together but this made no effect on idle.

What is the misfire count for each cylinder? Is one higher than the others, they all should be zero. A weak coil can cause problems.
