Fresh tires on the front or rear?

on the rear.

I'll never understand purposely buying mismatched tires, get 2 more of the same thing as you bought last time...

My two grown sons cringe when they pull in for a visit. Especially the one who comes from 600 miles away. They know at some point I will ease outside for my grumpy old man (ex-mechanic) vehicle safety inspection and jump them if I see uninflated or worn tires they are driving my grandkids around on. :(
