Cutting Open an Oil Filter

Do you just hit along the outer edge where the seam or lip is ?
Hello all.

When I use a "metal" cutting chisel (not wood), I cut in a circle
"along" the filter Base.

The threaded base then falls off.

I then remove the filter element fron housing.

I still don't understand how one prevents the cut material contaminating the filter. When metal is cut, there are always going to be particles around.

NOT if you use a filter cutter,its the same principle as a plumbers pipe cutter,no filings.

Or better yet, it's like using a can-opener to open a can of soup.
