    fuel filter change?

After spending $450 to get a fuel pump replaced (about 60K miles on the car) due to a clogged fuel filter, I've gotten into the habit of changing it every 30K miles. The cost savings of not changing it are not worth the potential risk of not changing it.

    Tying up a dog

Could you put up a run so he wouldn't be able to get as much leverage against the collar/harness? He may not get bored as easily either if he has more freedom of movement.

'94 Merc Sable 3.0L No Start, No Crank condition

'94 Merc Sable (130K miles), won't start, won't crank. The owner replaced the starter and ignition relay (I think, it was in the steering colum), still no start. If the key is turned to start, and the starter motor is jumped, the engine will start and run fine. The battery has been replaced...

    4 wheel aligment-biggest scam going??

I wouldn't have it done unless you notice some unusual wear on the tires. I had an alignment performed on my '02 Accent at about 70000 miles after I started to see some unusual wear. Unusual wear is gone, but I haven't noticed any handling or mileage improvements as a result.

    MOTORCRAFT 15W-40

androbot2084, Motorcraft 15w-40 and Rotella 5w-40 are both 40 weight oils at 100 deg C (about 15cst). The 15w and 5w number refer to their cold weather pumpability. I would not think there would be a fuel savings using one over the other. For example, I use Mobil1 0w-40 (also a 40 weight oil)...

Ford Focus or Kia Spectra - Opinons Needed

We're going to be picking up the Focus either today or tomorrow. Thanks for the input! Tosh, et al as to why don't we just buy an 8 or 10 year old Lexus or similar: = $$ We're financing this car. If I had the means to buy it outright, we might have been looking for something different, but...

Ford Focus or Kia Spectra - Opinons Needed

Beanoil, How do you service the trans? does it have a drain plug or do you need to drop the pan? This'll be the first thing I do with this car.

Ford Focus or Kia Spectra - Opinons Needed

We were looking at the Kia because it is only 3 years old. Also, I drive an 02 Hyundai which has been fantastic with regards to reliability and ease of maintenance. I know that Hyundai bought Kia a while back and that Kias reliability has increased as a result, but I don't know what model year...

Ford Focus or Kia Spectra - Opinons Needed

Now we're looking at either a: 2001 Ford Focus 4-door, auto, 75K miles. OR 2003 Kia Spectra, 4-door, auto, 55K miles. Both cars are $5,500. The Focus will cost $50 less/six months to insure. Both are clean, no rust/dings, both are quiet. The tranny fluid on both is clean and doesn't smell...

Need Comments - '98 Mitsu Galant

Thanks for all the replies! It turns out that the car was a '96 and that the price after warranty, etc was almost 5K. Way too much for a 10 year old car. So, we're passing on it.

Need Comments - '98 Mitsu Galant

My wife will be looking at a '98 Mitsubishi Galant tonight to replace her '94 Merc Sable. The Galant has about 110K miles, automatic, and 4cyl ( I think). $3500. What kind of reputation does this car have in terms of mechanical reliability. Auto tranny? Thanks!

HOORAY!!! SMART Car to be sold in USA!

My 2002 Accent routinely averages 37-38 mpg with a 70:30 mix of hwy/city driving. I've gone up to 42 mpg on longer trips at high speed with the AC on, and that AC is a good drag on my little 100 hp engine.

    Dealership Silliness

I called my Hyundai dealer yesterday. New hyundais are speced for 5w-20 oil. I wanted to know if that spec was retroactive, or only for new cars. The guy at the service desk said "5w-20? Does that even exist? We use 5w-30 for everything." I'm thinking about emailing Hyundai corporate and...

DIY Auto A/C Recharge kit w/built-in gauge- worth a try?

I used this same kit on my wifes car last summer, '94 Merc Sable. It took two cans of refrigerant to get the pressure on the dial up to where it was supposed to be. The AC worked fine all summer after that. I'll have to top it off again this year. I put one can in it to get it working (using the...
