Recently a neighbor helped me remove a stuck oil filter off of my 95 Jeep Cherokee 2WD 6cyl. It was a major PITA to get off and we ended up having to use a large flathead and mallet to tap it until it turned.

Unfortunately in the course of this lite beating the piece the filter screws onto is now bent down and in and I am unable to get the required clearance from the block to screw the filter back on. It's pretty close but the new fram filter i bought doesn't make it.

My question is, does anyone know any manufacturers that make filters smaller than frams. I live far enough from any auto parts stores that I would like to at least have some idea of what I should be looking for before I ride my bike 10 miles in the florida heat for nothing =)

Anyway, any ideas? Is this even a good idea ?

Thanks.

Bend it back up where it goes would be the best suggestion. If this is cant be done, a Walmart Super Tech or STP at AutoZone is shorter than a Fram due to the Encore, they should fit if the Fram is to tight.

Awesome. Thanks.

I tried to tap it back up from underneath but there isn't much room and I figured I would just make it worse. I'll give it another shot and try those filters if all else fails.

Thanks again!

There is an O-Ring between the adapter and block. I bet it got damaged in the beating and will leak now.

A very small filter is the Fram # 3614. Should be a ST3614. This filter has the same specs as the Ph16 that the heep calls for but is very small.

Like Chris says, the right angle adapter has an O ring where it mates with the block. Now if you haven't damaged it (btw- the O ring is $3 at the dealer if you are looked kindly upon by the parts man), you can just loosen the fastener that holds it (either a larger hex head or a Torx )...realign the adapter ..and tighten it when you get it to the proper position.

A Ford dealer may be more convenient ...but plan on paying $12 for the O ring. Same size ...probably the same source ..but Ford prices.

Yes, ST/PH3614 FL910 ..etc..etc.

I'm not sure what brand your looking for in a smaller filter, but STP, Mobil 1, and AC Delco have a filter with the same diameter, gasket seal, and thread size and pitch that is a shorter. STP - S7328, Mobil 1 - M1-109, AC Delco - PF2140. The S/PH/ST3614 does have the same threading and will probably work but it is significantly smaller than your original filter and has a smaller gasket seal.

Thank you the all the great information. I'll definitely take a look at the o-ring.

You can handle the FL400S/FL910 filter. Your basic filter ...almost industry wide uses a 2.8/2.4 (+/-) gasket ...and that's about everything ..hydraulics included (some). Yes, there are larger gaskets ..surely so ..but then you're typically out of the automotive lines.

Not worth worrying about. I'm using one of these right now on my wife's 4.0. It's an EaO57 dinky thing.

I ended up going with the FL910 and everything seems to be working well. There is a very slight leak but only when its running.

The leak should not be from the filter. It should be from the O ring on the adapter. I have one sitting right here ..with a ST3614 (fl910) on it. You can hold an FL1A up to it and you cannot hardly detect that there's any difference in the gasket size.

I figured after you all mentioned the O ring that is the problem. I found a good article w/ pictures that discusses swapping out the O rings on a Cherokee so I am going to work on that this week.
