Rotella T6 15-40 in my 18’ 6.7 CTD. 20 degrees F is a record temp for us.
Thinking about swapping to Delo XSP 5-40 but haven’t found any details about it.

Heres the specsheet of the Delo XSP 5W-40

https://cglapps.chevron.com/msdspds/PDSDetailPage.aspx?docDataId=493727&docFormat=PDF

Looks good to me - its usually around $19/gallon at Walmart....about the same as the Rotella T6 5W-40 (which IMHO is a better oil than the Rotella T6 15W-40).

Why do you think that the 5w40 is better than the 15w40? I would think it ultimately depends on the application but I would have thought that the 15w40 was better. Not arguing, just curious.

15w40 in the TDI and my ML, I use this oil.

https://www.bosslubricants.com/viewproductdetails/heavy-duty-extreme-diesel-engine-oils

it hardly every gets cold out here, today's low temp was 4 celcius, about 40F.

note the oil has a pour point of -33 celcius

I agree - the 15W-40 should really be 'better' - but looking at the VOA sheets; less of everything, and a 'low' TBN....

Even their own semi-syn T5 15W-40 seems better....

Pentosin Long Life lll 5w-30 (507.00 approved) with a VW filter in my 2013 VW Golf TDI. Before that was the Castrol SLX professional the dealer uses. Can't really tell a difference between the two. It'll be interesting to see if it burns any of the Pentosin, it didn't burn any of the Castrol over it's last 10K mile change. The Pentosin is ~$10 cheaper for 5 qts.

Ram in sig: 15w40 currently, 5w40 and 15w40 on standby. No mention of any other oil in the manual, not that I need any options, this is what I'd run anyway.

I use Delvac Super 1300 Semi Synthetic 15W-40 in my 1983 Mercedes 240d and will be using that same oil in my 1984 300SD mercedes as well when it hits 255,000 miles on the next oil change. I'm using Amsoil AME 15w-40 in my 1995 E300D. The other 2 diesels are real soot loaders, the 1995 is not. So it gets an oil that will last longer. I'll do an UOA just to make sure for all of them. I did a UOA on the 240d @ 15,000 miles using the Amsoil AME and Blackstone labs said to try 17,000 miles the next time. I went 10,000 miles on the 300SD and Blackestone labs said to go 11,000 miles the next time but I not going to do that as the soot level was at 1.7 % and Mercedes said the limit was 2%. I'm just going to use the Delvac and go 10,000 miles and then I'll let the UOA tell me what to do. On the 1995 E300d I'm going to do a UOA @ 10,000 miles with the Amsoil AME and go from there. It has electronic fuel injection so the soot loading is much less. ( .2% after 15,000 miles) I also have a 1988 mercedes 300e gas engine that I used a 15W-40 travellers oil in it. I went 10,000 miles and sent a sample UOA in and it came back with a really good report but it used a quart every 3,000 miles so I went with Mobil 1's 15W-50 to slow down the oil use but it still uses a quart every 3,000 miles. I'll just go back to the HDOE 15w-40 after my supply of 15W-50 is gone. I also have a 2008 Toyota Sienna that I use Mobil1 5W-30 EP in it. I go 20,000 miles per oil change. I use the Fram Ultra in that van. The van just hit 334,000 miles yesterday. BTW, the 240d has 316,000 miles the 300SD has 252,000 miles on it the E300d has 164,000 miles on it and the 1988 E300 has 257,000 miles on it. They all run very well and I'm pleased with all of them. Thank You, Bill
