Anybody know of any oils with the new SN Plus certification and A3/B3 or A3/B4?

I have a 2009 MINI JCW Clubman with direct injection and get a hidden knock code
(no CEL, have to look for it with an advanced scan tool) about once a month so I thought
an SN Plus oil along with occasional walnut blasting of the valves would be a good idea.

But. . .

All the SN Plus oils I've seen have A5/B5 specs which is a bit lighter duty than called for with my car.

It would be nice to use a 5W30 or 0W40 oil with SN Plus and A3/B4 specs. I'm also supposed to have
LL-01 spec but since I change the oil each 5K miles, don't really need the LL spec.

There is no API SN and SN Plus allowed for a 0W30 or a 5W30 and ACEA A3 at the same time.
I think there is one oil company that makes such an oil, but it's a farce.

You can have SN/SN+ and A3/B3 (not sure about A3/B4... might depend on sulfated ash).

I know that all the A3/B4 5W-30s out there are API SL due to Phosphorous limit (which does not apply to SN xW-40 grades... there are A3/B4 & SN 0/5W-40s... I believe the xW-40 phosphorous exemption went away with SN+, though)

You cannot have GF-5 and A3/B3/B4 due to HTHS (A3/B3/B4 is 3.5 minimum... out of the range for a GF-5).

As mentioned above, M1HM 10W-30 is A3/B3 and SN+

Unfortunately, ACEA hasn't implemented LSPI protection yet. However, it will be included in the next-generation ACEA, due in a few years. At that point, you will see Euro oils with mixed Ca + Mg detergents.

Meanwhile, you can use this. It's SN PLUS and ACEA E9, also a full synthetic, which should perform similarly to an average A3/B4 if not better. HTHSV = 4.2 cP is also far stronger than that of typical A3/B4 oils (M1, GC, BMW, etc.), which run around 3.5 - 3.8 cP, which means you can even race your car with this oil.

A UOA on this oil:

Also, CK-4 oils have antifoam additives and go through antifoam tests.

I see that Amsoil Signature Series 0w40 (AZF)
Is now SN plus, and although it isn't listed as
A3B3 or A3B4, it does have an HTHS of 3.76
and other specs that suggest it should qualify
as such.
I might try that next oil change in a few months.

It looks like Delo 5w30XSP Would be perfect as it's SN+, E9, HTHS of 3.5

Seems Ideal for something like a turbo Mini Cooper or Hyundai 1.6T both which allow for thicker oils to be used.

I'm a big fan of the dual rated HDEO.

Can't find Delo here, but the Rotella MV 5w-30 is easy to find here and it's also SN+.

Do not bother with API.
Get Castrol 0W40 and call it a day.
