Honda getting serious about my airbag recall

THIS is a Claymore Mine:

. When triggered, about two pounds of C4 explosive propels about 700 BB-sized steel balls out in a ~60 degree, flattened "funnel of death," considered "effective" to 50 meters, but still deadly as far as 200+ meters. Sorta like a Takata airbag on steroids.

Now picture one of these attached to the center of your steering wheel. You are sitting less than ONE measly meter from the thing. Even worse, YOU are the enemy -- or should I say, YOU are your own worst enemy!!!

Basically it's an explosive designed to inflate the airbag quickly. But apparently the materials used and the age of the inflators might result in them exploding with enough force to break the inflator canister. There was a woman named Hien Tran who died after a crash, but they initially believed she'd been stabbed in the neck. Eventually they found metal and plastic pieces in her neck. I found this video showing one of these canisters actuating.

Just find the wires that go to it and apply 12v to them, preferably while standing some distance away. Then you will know for sure if you've got a bad one.

Dumb analogy of the year award here...

In Oz, they are threatening to cancel the motor vehicle registration of people who fail to get their airbag replaced...in the face of waiting lists of months of people trying to get them fixed which could take another 2 years 2020

So are there still long wait times for parts in the US, also? I guess I thought they were caught up on these somewhat.

There should be plenty of replacement parts. Yesterday I made an appointment minutes before leaving, and they were able to install both the same day. Mostly it was waiting for a mechanic to be free.

A Honda technician went to my brother's house and did the airbag recall in his driveway.

No joke. They will eventually come to your house if you keep ignoring all the recall letters from Honda.

Some recalls you can ignore, like the dial shifter Autopark crap FCA keeps bothering me about.

A claymore mine in your steering wheel though is not one of those. If you're that worried the dealership will screw it up takes video or pictures of the car before you drop it off and let the advisor know you've done that. That'll solve that issue.

Was going to quote a post (not OP) here and directly comment on it because in my judgment it's so whacked. Decided against it. I'll just say not getting the airbag recall done because of fear of what a dealer might do in the process, twisted "logic". Also qualifies as example of my favorite Ron White saying. And nomination for a Darwin award.

It's said, it takes all kinds. smh

If most of the people on this website wont take their car to the dealer for an oil change because they are worried about the tech doing a bad job , how can they be trusted with doing something like an airbag?

Aren't most oil changes done by junior guys? What are the chances they've got the same junior guys swapping out airbags?

Well, first of all, there's the liability issue. Both the dealership (who probably wouldn't touch this sort of work were it not for their contract with the car maker) and the car maker realize that the stakes are literally life and death. A messed up oil change, while unacceptable, usually doesn't kill people dead! I'd trust that the dealer is going to have very strict instructions to follow and QA to back it up.

More fundamentally, that reasoning is just more camouflage for excusing procrastinating. So the dealer might not do the job perfectly? They might nick a piece of plastic or leave a grease smudge on the floor mats? There's literally NOTHING they can mess up that's worse than a piece of shrapnel in your aorta!

My point of view on this is that a specialist should do the job. Baised on my life experiences most places cannot do anything right.

From what I've read, the units are pretty much plug-and-play. They're not complicated at all.

Our lube techs do a lot of the airbag recalls. They are simple except for some passenger ones where the dash comes out due to no access door.

And you took the bait. J/K.

I was really surprised by the idea that recall people are making house calls, and wondered if others were aware or had experience with the process.

Most responses were just telling me that the airbags are dangerous which the tv had already told me. I do however appreciate the concern.
