Also changed spark plugs, air filter, and PCV valve while the oil was dripping.

Not bad for an hour’s work.

Out came 2.5 quarts? So it was two quarts low? Oh no.

Affirmative. When it stopped dripping after 2.4 seconds, my sphincter got tight. Poor neglected van. Hopefully she’ll let me continue to look after maintenance.

I would have replaced the cartridge filter with a Toyota OEM cartridge, but I could not get the dang thing off. Wouldn't budge at all when I just yanked on the wrench unassisted, and when I got a makeshift cheater bar I sheared the drive socket of a cast aluminum cartridge filter wrench trying to break it loose. I suspect that the dealer installed the cartridge filter before screwing the filter drain plug back in, resulting in the canister body getting grossly over-torqued. I think I'm going to try and find a sturdier (steel?) filter wrench and give it another go at a ~5k OCI, as Toyota specs a 10k OCI for regular service and a 5k OCI for severe service. The oil pan drain plug was also a bear to get loose, but I was able to get it off using the cheater bar without breaking anything.

You probably know there are canister removal caps that have slots for the ridges in the plastic canister.
Mine has a large hex bolt cast into the cap as well as a 1/2" drive.
Get out your long breaker bar and get that canister off.
I have heard some use an impact with short bursts.
You know, I believe the proper torque is something less than 20 pound/feet.

Good luck and please post your results.

That's what I was referring to when I talked about shearing a filter wrench trying to get that canister off. One of these guys, specifically: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B073XF45NF/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 . The part where you put the 3/8" drive in isn't a square any more (it sheared rather than getting stripped - the sides look like an earthquake fault line) and the canister didn't budge. I'm considering finding somebody who makes a steel one for attempt #2.

When I did the oil on my friend's cobalt, the canister was very hard to remove as well. I didn't have the proper tool as I don't own a vehicle with one. Ended up using an adjustable wrench very carefully. Will buy the tool for next time! I have a 32mm socket but the angle of the canister made it impossible to use.

Subaru backed the drain intervals down to 6K from 7.5K on these engines and since I have warranty out to 100K on the engine, I'll be using 0W-20 and doing 6K drains for some time to come.
