mods - please move if needed, I had no idea where to place this

I would love to see some discussion and thoughts on this. It seems Argonne National Laboratory has invented a self healing DLC that breaks down the engine oil to regenerate. Interesting for sure!

It is very interesting. I am getting an impression its a coating that goes onto the metal surfaces itself? If so, many manufacturers do so already. If this is an oil additive? I am not sure what to think.

It all sounds good though.

Thanks for sharing..

I'd be interested in knowing how long the current versions of DLC and other vapor deposited coatings are supposed to last in comparison to this regenerating one. My car has two different types of these anti-friction coatings and the current versions seem to be pretty ubiquitous across many makes and models.

Very True. I know my VW and my Nissan vehicles have coatings in the block. I believe its some kind of ceramic coating to cut reciprocating losses. One would think with regular oil changes these coatings in theory would last the life of the block.

Ummm... isn't the tribofilm continually renewed by normal lubrication anyways? What they are describing doesn't make much sense.... essentially, "as the coating wears away, it replenishes itself"

Call me a cynic, but I see two possibilities: 1. it's fake. 2. It's so incredible that big corporations will never let it see the light of day.

there are more articles out there...so not sure it is "fake"

Whether they can or can't, I'm sure there's an additive company out there marketing something with similar claims, thought with much less legitimacy.

Neat idea.

For me engine longevity has never been a problem especially if it is well designed. The body and electrical are usually more problematic.
