I intend to change out the rear axle oil on my daughters 2008 Ford Escape by using Mobil 75W-90 instead of Fords Motorcraft 80W/90. Is this a safe/wise move? both meet GL-5 specs.

You're fine. Some people might go overboard with the sarcasm, but don't let that get to ya.
Go ahead and use the Mobil.

I wouldn't consider replacing MC 80W90 GL5 of [email protected]*C of 146 cSt with a M 1 75W90 of lower [email protected]*C 115 cSt, not that the axle would blowup.

Edit:delete '132 cSt'

Another confirmation for the Mobil 1 - 75W90 LS.
I have used it in many vehicles from my Firebird FORMULA Rear Differential to a Lexus AWD Transfer Case and Differential. All with great success.

Funny you should mention this.

MC gear oil (and Mercon V for that matter) is surprising hard to come by. Considering that you can get Motorcraft Oil almost anywhere I thought I was just going to walk into Wal-Mart and leave with MC gear oil and Mercon V and boy was I in for a surprise.

Iím sure the M1 will be fine.

Have it in the front & rear differential in the Ram in signature -- no problems 25,000 miles later. You will be good to go!! wink

I had this exact same question. So I emailed Mobil. They said no. "No". They didn't give any explanation, just said no. I would guess that a lot of times you could get away with it in a lot of applications. But Mobil said no and so I won't do it. Since they said no, I assume it won't be better, and it could be worse.
