Did any air-cooled VW's have AC?

Science teacher at my high school had a Corvair with A/C. He was a strange bird who work Pendleton jackets and smoked a pipe. The A/C system on a Corvair took up lots of space in the engine compartment.

Heat and defrost isn't the best that's true but A/C could care less where the compressor is mounted or if the engine is air cooled or not.

As long as the condenser has decent air flow the system will work as efficiently as with a front mounted engine, maybe even better as the condenser is not in front of a hot radiator.

No.
I have worked on them, and they run hotter with the AC.
Airflow is blocked, and under hood air is way hotter.
The plumbing will be longer though like a modern SUV with rear A/C.

Our '81 Vanagon was available with both AC and a gas heater.
Ours had neither.
The gas heater would have been well worth the liter an hour the OM said it burned in really cold weather.
