I posted this on the other thread but it feels like it could be
worth a thread all on it's own. Let's see your network setup (and by side benefit, your awesome MSPaint skillz!)

Sorry but I'm totally not going to use MSpaint.. haha.. Mine is simple enough, considering it's just me I have a lot of devices I guess (some of which I never use, the consoles)

18megabit internet connection, cable
D-Link DIR-655

Ethernet:
Samsung plasma
PS3
Xbox360
My gaming PC

Wireless:
Lenovo X120E
Lenovo 3000
Nintendo Wii

Everything runs great. I love my 18meg internet connection and the DIR-655 is a champ. Have had to reboot it twice since I moved in February.

I'd whip up a sweet Visio but I'm lazy and leaving to get some Chipotle for lunch. :-)

Due to the fact that I rent and don't own at this time, I don't bother running cables since it can be a hassle to rip up carpet or route it along the floor in a place I may not live for more than a year...so I resort to 5GHz N.

Comcast Performance 25/5
Motorola SB6121 (via RG6)
Netgear WNDR4000 (via CAT6A)

Sony PS3 (via CAT6A)
TiVo Series3 (via CAT6A)

Desktop: Cisco AE3000 (via 5GHz 802.11n)
Work laptop: Intel Ultimate-N 6300 (via 5GHz 802.11n)
Smartphone: Motorola Droid RAZR (via 2.4GHz 802.11n)

Forgot this part

My laptops is connected via the 5ghz Band name "Imouto" (Little sister in Japanese)
Everything else is connected to the 2.4ghz Band name "Hivemind"

Network computer names
My desktop: ARCHON
Fileserver: SUPPLYDEPOT
My Laptop: TERRAN
Mom's laptop: OVERLORD
Sisters laptop: HELLION
Brothers laptop: MARAUDER
"adopted" sister laptop: DARKTEMPLAR

Yes, I've named all our computers after Starcraft 2 classes/units.

I have a Motorola Surfboard modem and a Linksys E1000 router. I have a desktop computer connected to the router via ethernet, and my laptop connected to the router wirelessly. That is all.

I have a WRT54GS running DD-WRT as my router.

Wired, I have the Netflix laptop (screen died, battery died), server and laserjet printer.

Wireless I have - 2 laptops, 2 android phones and 2 kindles.

Pretty simple setup. Back in the day, I used to have a web server / VPN / RDP public facing to its own domain. Times changed, and now that I'm no longer a hobbyist (professional, instead) I don't have the time or energy to play with the stuff at home any more.

I have a Fios 35/35 and just use the router they give you for wireless. At my family room TV, I bought a Netgear MoCA adapter that is connected to a Trendnet Gb switch to connect to the TV, PS3 and Apple TV. I also ran a line off it to connect to the "media" laptop that has all the movies on it. My AVR is connected with a Trendnet wireless adapter because it is too much of a pain to pull it out of the cabinet to connect it to the switch....so it stays how I did it before the switch.

I've thought about adding a cheap DD-WRT or Tomato router elsewhere as an access point, but I really don't experience wireless performance issues. The PS3 and Apple TV in the family room used to get a little laggy streaming video, so they got the wired network upgrade. My next purchase is probably going to be a NAS. I was all ready to buy one last year, but then drive prices shot through the roof.

For a while, I had my laptop that is connected to the TV wireless but I was having issues streaming from the server. The odd thing was, I could stream netflix or youtube in HD but it couldn't stream 420x640 video locally. Apparently the web sites can do some CRAZY compression.

I ended up having to wire it in so I could stream locally without a problem.

Everyone in the house connected to a DD-WRT router, wireless or wired.

DD-WRT router repeat neighbor's signal, goes to cable modem.

Yes, I split the bill with the neighbor.

My network is similar except I'm running Cisco RV220W gateway to SG-300 switch in level 3 mode.

Switch configuration setup:
  • VLAN1 - Default
  • VLAN2 - Reserved
  • VLAN3 - Normal Office Use
  • VLAN4 - Trunk line to 3Com 1000-Base-T swich in cinema room for streaming online media
  • VLAN5 - VoIP use

All wired of course for security reasons, by CAT6 ethernet cable.
