If the battery does not have the normal cell caps it is probably a maintenance. free battery and you should not add water.

That's what I can't figure out, whether it's maintenance-free or not. It probably still has cell caps, but they are not easily accessible.

The panel with the label has vent holes on the side. I'm guessing cell caps may be under it.

I bought one in July form my F150 (Group 65) and I hope I get more than 13 months out of it.
It already shows 12.4 v after sitting for a day or so, and on the colder days we had here, it was a little slow to start.
I got rid of my other battery (an almost 5 year old AutoZone) because it was having similar symptoms.

We were talking about this JCI case in a another thread, and the risk of trying to get to the cells.

On the whole, I think "maintainance-free" batteries have become the norm, and the case designs reflect it.

In the past, cell caps were threaded for easy on/off. Even pry-off coverings with screwdriver slots imply a level of accessibility went into the design.

In all probability, the ones seen now that have no such provisions, or even discernible ports like the one pictured, are considered sealed and aren't meant to tampered with.

That's an East Penn battery. They call it the "flush top". I remember seeing that on the AAA branded batteries that my parents had installed on their cars. I could have installed a Costco battery for about $50 less than they paid, but they got someone to come to their driveway to install it so they wouldn't need to "bother" me.

The WM H8 as pictured is a JCI battery. Unless EP has started manufacturing their batteries in Mexico like it's clearly marked. But then this forum would implode if that were to occur...

It also has the classic JCI date sticker. Seen at WM, NAPA (regional), ORAP SuperStart, Interstate, etc.

They switched to this case top design for their "Euro" application sizes years ago. I created a thread asking about it at the time. The venerable old case design had the single oval center vent (that required the adapter tube), and siamesed three-cell caps under the large plastic basket handle.

There's an alternative JCI case top design that has individual cell caps, and provisions for dual handles. See at Sears, and Costco (sans handles), just off the top of my head.

In keeping with the topic, those caps sit flush, have plain surfaces, and no provisions for removal. The seams are very small, so they've have to be drilled into for extraction. They're also all at least partially covered by the stickers --> maint-free battery; no user tampering.

You obviously are correct. Look at and zoom in on the serial number on the battery... It starts with JC. Johnson controls. Another observant member noted that Johnson Controls start with a JC in the serial number and the East Penn batteries start with a EP in their serial numbers. Almost all the batteries at my local Wally World have EP in the serial numbers. And the exact same case as other East Penn batteries.

I stand corrected Looked like the flush top of an East Penn, along with vent tubes. I though maybe they were getting it under contract like I remember AC-Delco filters that were made by Champ Labs.

if I'm not mistaken, the SN starts with JCI, the stickers says Distributed by Johnson Controls, and another sticker says made in mehico.
