We have hooked up two different new DVD's (a JVC and a Magnavox) to our TV. For each DVD we read and followed the instruction manual. We are sure that we hooked each up correctly. We went through the "set up" instructions for each DVD. We could not get either DVD to display in color. It only shows up in black and white. The TV is a Toshiba purchased new in 1998. We have a VCR that displays just fine in color on the TV. We hooked each DVD up to the same Video In and Audio In holes on the TV as the VCR was connected to. We tried two different new DVD movie discs. We also tried using the VCR cables instead of the cables that came with the JVC DVD, in case there was something wrong with the JVC cables. We still got no color. We consulted two sons and a good friend who are knowledgable in such things and called the JVC help line. They all said we did all the right things. We tried both the JVC and the Magnavox on the TV of one of our sons and both displayed in color. We are at our wits end! Anyone got any ideas?

Most DVD player have connections for component video out (3 video connectors red, green, blue) as well as the regular composite video out (single yellow connector). Depending on the TV make sure you connect it right. For example if your TV has the composite video in single video connector make sure you connect from the DVD composite out yellow connector not one of the component outs. If you connect from your DVD player one of the component video outs maybe thats why you don't see all the colors. Also I would not recommend connecting your DVD player to the VCR then TV because I believe it has some kind of copy protection stuff. Should hook up DVD directly to TV. Most newer TVs have component video input which makes the video quality better. I'm no technician but hope that helps.

I also know that composite and component video can't be used at the same time, and/or s-video with those at the same time...wonder if you had 2 or more different connections going @ the same time??

Try connecting dvd plyr and tv using only ONE TYPE of video connection, and see. (is the audio ok, btw?)

and yes, when you try one type of connection, unhook the other type of BOTH ends, a dvd playr which has a s-video/composite jack conneted to it, will have trouble with component, even if the other end/s of s-vid or composite is NOT connected to the TV...in other words, it still "thinks" that you're trying to use 2/more connection types at the same time. (this is true on some dvd players, but may not be true for all dvd players/TVs: as long as they have a jack conncetd to it, it will "think" it's a full connection even when the other end of the jack is NOT connected another component.)

\...please let us know if you figure it out...I'm very curious about this connectivity puzzle.

This happend to me when i tried hooking up a dvd player to my tv using component video connections. I either got B&W, or only certain colors, i dont remember. Anyways, i tried using S-Video and it worked perfectly. My ps2 is hooked up to the same tv using component video connection, and everything is fine so i guess it was the dvd player.

One major question - is your TV set color or black and white ?
