This might have already been a topic in the past...The search on this site isn't that great so I will start this topic. Why did you guys join this site or how did you come about finding this site?

I'll start. I was part of this Infiniti forum and I heard someone mention BITOG. They were discussing oil and that you can't switch between syn & dino blah blah. So I copied and pasted that into Google and found this site. I can honestly say that I used to believe in the can't switch myth, but this website educated me. I then spent a lot of time reading the old threads about oil, about ATF, and about our favorite...PEA filled fuel injectors. I then realized that I was wasting my money on the wrong fuel injector cleaner.

Anyway, I don't post on here much now because I've learned so much about everything I felt was relevant to me and filtered out the [censored] some people spew. This site is GREAT for learning information. I typically just sit back and read the threads now and really come to BITOG to look at the sales/AAP codes in the Promotions area now and days.

Ok your turn!!!

I found BITOG when searching for how to quite a valve train tick on an engine. I then lurked for a few months and then it happened......... I became a BITOG Addict!

I found the site from a search. I was searching for something to do with oil and it popped up. I lurked for a few months and read almost all the info and threads and had a question so I joined.

Now I find I go on for VOA`s UOA`s and I like to help as much I can with newbie or not questions regarding whatever is discussed on the site. I also like all the newly updated and older specs for various items.

I seriously found it through work research.

I work for a standards organization, and I was doing research on a standard for re-refined oil, and I found a link discussing them on BITOG.

Was hooked in like 30 seconds....

It seemed anytime I googled something about oil for work, BITOG would pop up. (GOOD JOB ON SEO BTW). So I started lurking - after about a year of following some great insightful members I decided I might want to contribute to the conversation; so one day I just decided to pipe in. I always look forward to a good top notch oil discussion and try to not get pulled in to the "my oil is better than your oil" nonsense; although it makes me laugh really hard sometimes.

I joined while in search of a 12 step program to wean myself off 5w30 and into 5w20 for my first Ford that called for that "thin" oil. It was very difficult to kick the habit and must admit i have had a few relapses.

I was doing research on "Synthetic Oils" and to see if they were worth the extra money, or if it was a marketing gimmick.

It turns out that it is a marketing gimmick and I run my Taurus 3.0 V6 on a mixture of MMO, STP, and Lucas Oil thickener on a SuperTech oil Filter!
banana2.gif

When I drain it every 10,000 miles it is like a massive black booger.

I have 180,000 miles and counting!

(That is supposed to be a joke, I'm actually running MOS2, 2.5 quarts of Chevron 10w30, and 2 quarts of Supertech 15w40, on a Motorcraft filter. It leaks from a known defect and the thicker oil and MOS2 actually help.)

I found it in a Google search about diesel motor oil-then I scored about 35 gallons of discontinued Delo 400 SAE 30 oil from AZ for 99 to ONE CENT a gallon-and the rest was (money-saving) history!

How I joined BITOG:

At the time, I had recently purchased my 1990 F150. The engine in it had sludge like you wouldn't believe. I truly think it had 5 to 6 gallons (seriously) worth of sludge in it.

Well, I started surfing the web to see if there was a product that could remove the sludge without me having to take down the engine to scrape it out.

Ultimately, I had to break down and remove the intake, timing cover, valve covers and oil pan to get the job done, but in reading the site, I learned that for all of my automotive knowledge, my understanding of motor oil was very limited and biased.

I also learned to try new brands as well and I've been pleasantly satisfied with the results since joining.

In addition to that, it's been very resourceful as far as getting information on outstanding questions I've had and I hope that the information I've given from years of auto repair/maintenance has been as resourceful to others I've reached out to that were in need.

lol. It's great to read all of the responses. Please people, keep them coming. This is refreshing to read...a change of subject somewhat.

I first heard of the site when lurking around the MX-6 forums. Read a few posts about tranny fluid in 2004/2005, and then kinda forgot about it ...

Then a bit ago I came back upon it while searching for information on motorcycle oils. Pretty soon, I was reading up on automotive oils, then greases, ATF, coolants, etc. Joined at that point.

I haven't been a member for too long, but for some reason I don't remember much about life before BITOG ...

I was reading another forum where various "experts" were claiming that "Pennzoil=wax=sludge". Someone posted a link to a thread here that claimed otherwise.

I joined on Valentine's Day, 2004. Too long ago to remember. Seeing as it was Valentine's Day, though, I was probably researching what kind of oil to buy my wife for Valentine's Day.

That likely explains the subsequent divorce...(just kidding)
