Who buys tires according to brand?

I tend to buy Michelin, whatever the current highest performance version is, PS2, PSS, etc. They only last 2 or so years anyway so no worry about rotting sidewalls.

I tend to buy Michelin, just because I get tires at Costco and Bridgestone is a rip-off at the prices they want.

Now, if I was close to a DT I would be open to experimentation.

Don't care about brand all that much, the Sonata needs tires soon and I need to do some research.

Won't be a Michelin though. That's for sure.

Brand factors in less than what characteristics I'm looking for which can differ by vehicle, tire category, speed rating, and several other things including price.

I haven't had particularly good luck with Michelin tires, so the premium I'm being asked to pay prevents me from re-purchase. If I don't need an additional performance element they provide and they wear 25-30% faster ( my experience twice ) then it becomes more about the brand in terms of what I won't buy versus what I will buy. If I have to pay $50 a corner more for the Michelin and others are comparable in the same category, it becomes more about the value proposition.

I think all the major brands produce good and bad tires...I will admit that there are some brands I am wary of, Sumitomo makes a low cost AS tire in the OEM size for my FXT that gets some very good reviews and I just don't know enough about the company to pull the trigger and try it.
Have purchased Michelin, Bridgestone, Firestone, General, Nokian, Goodyear, Yokohama, and other brands for my family's vehicles and haven't had a real dog yet. The OEM tires on our two recent Subarus were awful and the ones that came on my RAV4 were fine at first, but wore out very quickly.

I'd much rather mail-order an actual brand than locally buy some chinese knockoff. Gotten a lot of Hankooks this way and been happy with all of them.

Michelin has always been consistently good so it’s my first choice. Due to a recall I got $1200 worth of tires for free after using them for 30k miles.

I have had very good luck with Hankook lately and with DTD’s sales and factory rebates they are a good value. Bridgestone is good also. The Pirelli plant in Mexico is turning out some great tires. I wouldn’t hesitate to consider the affiliated brands of these companies also.

Last tires were Hankook 245/45-19 tires for 65-16 for a smidge over $200 for the set.

Neither will I after having to replace a 3 year old set with 22K due to sidewall cracking.

There are certain brands that I absolutely will not buy due to personal experience, but will choose out of those remaining, factoring in pricing, value, sales, etc. Have 2 vehicles with Pirelli's, one with Generals, and another with Coopers. Have been happy with all 4 sets of tires.

Not that you had to change them.
Mine cracked in a short order too, but the performance was linear---ly poor. One thing good about them was that the poor dry traction was linear across the temperature range, so when the car broke into a drift, the warming of the tires from spinning did not affect the tackyness (the lack of). But if I wanted to drift the car I would not buy 1200 set of shoes...

Not necessarily a safe bet. There is a Dunlop branded tire made by Goodyear in the US that has killed Harley riders due to manufacturing defects. Michelin on the other hand makes some very good motorcycle tires and so I own some.

2 weeks ago I put Hankook Dynapro AT-m tires on my Frontier to replace the OE General Grabber HTS tires. I chose Hankook by reading many reviews and factoring in price. Only later did I find that Nissan chose this tire for OE on the 4x4 Frontiers.

It appears that there may be poor tires available from most brands. Certain OE Goodyears seem to be some of the most mediocre tires going. The Generals I had would have gone 60k miles, but I will be traveling some bad roads and wanted new AT tirse rather than 2/3rd gone highway tires.

Bottom line seems to be that research is necessary to avoid buying a dog. Brand loyalty may not suffice.

No, I didn't have to change them.
I could have merely put my wife in the van with obviously defective tires. and wait for the sidewall(s) to fail at 60 MPH; endangering herself and others.
I don't roll that way, pun aside.

I buy based on reviews.from other like-minded individuals.

On one car ride and noise take priority. On the other, grip and cost are at the top.

The truck will get the cheapest round rubber that fits.

I think the highest quality in the manufacturing of tires is ones from Japan. The blend line between carcass rubber and tread rubber is near perfectly even all around the tire on my old yokohama, toyo and sumitomo autocross tires worn on the shoulders. No cracks at mold joints or at carcass/tread joint and usually require very little weight to balance.
My sport comp 2's made in the US have the blend line vary by almost a quarter inch and have cracked at the mold joints and torn a bit where the carcass and tread rubber meet on the shoulder from hard cornering. Also one is starting to go out of round. They still grip well even at 3/32 in the wet but they are looking and starting to feel rough!
I still buy tires based on reviews for that model, and in the last 4 sets, its been 2 from japan, 1 from the US, and 1 from Canada.

every time I purcahse tires I start from scratch and will consider any tire and/or brand. and then narrow based on price and/or special needs. for instance, the Cougar got Michelin Pilot Super Sports. I wanted high grip tires and cost was not a concern it see's some light track use; and it has a heavily modified engine, transmission, drivetrain. right now I am shopping for the Rogue and will consider any tire. the Sentra got General sport tires GX-05 (or something like that)

I refuse to buy any tire with an odd brand name like "Cum-ho" or "Han-kok".

By the way, I've always had good experience with Generals.

Doesn't get any hotter than Arizona ...the Michelin defender ltx on my last truck over 80K miles and my kid now is still driving it. I now have a set on my new truck and they are awesome E rated tires.

When I was 10 and mom put Michelin's on the Fiat 428 i could feel the difference riding in the back seat.
