Use what the manual says.

So for your engine 5w30 year round. ANY 5w30. Change it 5k or 6 months and your fine.

Its that simple!

You are going to gain NOTHING using/trying a 5w-20, 10w30, 5w-40, 10-40, 20-50, 0w-30, 15w-50 (what have I missed...) IMO.

Take care, bill

Thx Bill

Thanks for making this thread tackleberry. It still remains anything but clear despite your best efforts though doesn't it? I am sticking with Val syn 5 30 also.

yea really and yw.....I guess when all else fails, stick with what the people say that build these engines. After all, who knows the engines better then the people that build them?

Bill, in your opinion, would you still change a synthetic oil every 6 months. I do not drive the truck much and when I do it is 98% highway. It stays covered up most of the time. In a 6 month period, I may only have gone 1K-2K miles.

Yep, I'd change it every 6 months or 5k miles.

And I'd prob NOT use Syn unless you get it on a deal. If your spending more for Syn you need run it longer to show any benefit. With your usage, I'd run conventional oil and change it often (ie the 6mo) to get the by products out.

If you lived in a cooler area, I'd prob suggest even shorter OCIs!

But, others will disagree. Using Syn for 1-2k miles is a TOTAL waste unless the engine REQUIRES it. And even with syn, I'd change it more often due to the short trips.

Driving it more often and longer trips we could get into longer OCIs as the water and such are burned off more often. Then maybe a Syn could get into the mix.

I ran an OCI for 1 year in a friends truck. Total miles was 3k. I was REALLY scared when we changed the oil that he had a head gasket leak as the oil came out looking like more coolant than oil.

It was just the water from short trips. We went to 4 month OCIs after the 1 year OCI and the oil came out looking normal.

My wife drives very short trips in our Outback, but once a week at the minimum she does go 15-20 miles one way to work and then home same distance and our UOAs look good. In her car we keep the OCIs to no more than 7,500 miles or 6months. (for warrenty reason and oil is cheap)

Just my opinion but I've taken a lot of motors well past 200k miles with never any problems.

Pablo calls me Mr Smooth! (I wish I was married to Mrs Smooth so she would take care of my cars better)

Take care, bill

I just read over some materal that Dr. AEHaas sent me http://ferrarichat.com/forum/faq.php?faq=new_faq_item#faq_haas_articles and he recommended MC 5w-20 because of its better "flow", that why I started this hole thread. My mpg went down from 17 mpg to 14 mpg when I switched from RP 5w30 to Val Syn 5w30 so I figured if I got better "oil flow" with a "thinner" 5w-20, it may help with fuel mileage a little. I guess I'll just stick with the Val Syn 5w30 for now or go back to the RP. Dunno

You missed the point, politics and government meddling is involved in all of this.

If manufacturers could choose a motor oil that offers better protection, free of their CAFE burdens, it's more than fair to say they wouldn''t be calling for 5w30/5w-20 weight oils!!

Furthermore, some of people on this site have vested interests in one type or brand of oil over another, so beware.

Could someone PLEASE point me to thread that will help me decide if I should use 0W 20 in my 3.0L.

So far one old timer expert says one thing, and another old timer expert says something else, and mere comments about how hip it is to believe in 20W oils alone are not helpful to me.

Oilgal, keep in mind that the "advice" you're getting here for the most part is from people who have no training, background or eduction in the field of tribology. The fact that two "old timer experts" have given opposite opinions should prove my point. This board is jammed to the rafters with people who think they can "lurk" for awhile, read a few posts, and suddenly become qualified to tell you what is best for your particular needs.

There are a few truly qualified experts that will pop in from time to time and give real, educated information but most of what you read is from amateurs that don't have the background or credentials to give you any useful advice. Bruce381,Pablo,Molakule and G-Man are a few of the real experts that are actually qualified to give advice, along with a few others, but most of the habitual responders are just regurgitating what the real experts say and want to appear to be knowledgable.

What I'm trying to tell you is don't expect 18,000 untrained amateurs to be able to tell you in a sentence or two what will work in your vehicle under the conditions you drive in.

Just one Hoosier who doesn't really care if he offends some of the wannabes, trying to look out for another Hoosier. Take care Oilgal and take the "advice" you get here with a HUGE grain of salt.

Thx Bill.......except for starting the truck once per week or 2 and running / driving it around the block for 30-45 mins to keep it lubed, the truck is only used for long highway trips (about 800-1000 miles round trip) approx once every 3-4 months. I'm just wondering if I should take advantage of the Synpower BOGO at AAP this month, which comes out to about $2.74 per quart, or look for something even cheaper.

If you can not get anything cheaper, then stay with it. If the cost difference is little than stay with it.

If you can get normal Valvoline, Pennzoil, QS, Mobil 5000, Halvoline, etc for under a buck a quart on sale, I know what I'd be getting.

It all adds up and once money is spent, you can't get it back. (I wish I learned this 30 years ago when I was younger..

Do you think, I could safely use 0W 20 oil, in my 1995 Mitsu 3.0L with almost 130K miles on it?

I am early into an ARX rinse. It gets 20-21 InHg at idle hot in neutral, and it gets 20 InHg hot in Drive at a light, has the A604 ATX. AMV spec'd for the 6G72 3.0L is 20 InHg. It does not leak any oil, new seals cam plugs etc., and my oil consumption is about nil after the ARX clean phase. I have done a few things to my van here and there, and if you like you can look at my cowl induction air intake system and such, pictures over here.

I have been using Valvoline Synpower 5W 30, and doing 3k OCIs. I used the same weight same brand, in dino, for the ARX clean and rinse.

My spouse drives it to work every day in stop and go. On the weekend I drive it very hard, on the highway, here in Indiana which is usually either hot and humid or really cold, which is why I do 3K OCIs using Val Synpower despite the expense. I know it may be a waste but I enjoy the peace of mind.

I would sure appreciate your input on this Bill. I am just a newbie and know NOTHING about oil really, and I well know it.

Thank you.

Me too just a few days ago! I love when AAP does that.
grin2.gif

Except now I am thinking of exchanging my two cases of Val Syn 5W 30 for Valvoline 0W 20.

I wish I could figure this out and be sure. It is just so hard to sort through all the opinions here!

We need a thread containing real experts only, where they alone can discus the 0W 20 issue, so we can study their comments in order to decide on this issue.

Please ADMIN could you set that up for us?

I bet people would come from ALL OVER the INTERNET to see

THE BITOG EXPERTS ONLY 0W 20 WEIGHT OIL SMACKDOWN!

What a sticky that would make.

This link from Dr. Haas may be all you need. It's a lot of info but it is good. It will deff give you a different outlook on oil.

I thought 0W 30 is very different than a 0W 20 and a 5W 30.

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't it true that it is not a simple matter of merely 'targeting' (going for) the 0W of the 0W 30 you speak of?

I mean, I thought I read that 0W 30, is actually "thicker" than a 5W 30.

My AAP only carries the 5w30, 10w30 and 20w-50.
