OK. Figured I won't get flamed here for asking a newb question. And this question has been bothering me becasue I could not find a specific answer. Did a search and could not figure out the answer. So point me to a thread or the best answer.

Porsche 911 - going back to Mobil 1 0w40, but in my brief search for alternatives I came across Amsoil for euro cars with full SAPS or half SAPS (?). Anyway figured out one has more ash than the other. Great. But no one ever said which would be recommended for the Porsche and why. Actually says both.

Again - I probably won't ever use it, it was just one of those questions in the back of my mind that I could never find an answer.

Sulphur in fuel. Due to high sulphur in fuel, it is necessary to have Full or Mid-SAPS in order to go through recommended OCI.
Stick to M1 0W40 or Castrol 0W40. Cannot make mistake there and they are cheap.

Castrol and M1 have HTHS on par with Amsoil (3.7 and 3.8).

Sticking with the mobil 1 but just curious. When would one use mid SAPS and when high SAPS?

Mid-SAPS would help if there are carbonization issues. Also, Mid-SAPS oils are mandated by a lot of manufacturers for their diesel engines due to emission systems.

Amsoil Mid-SAPS Euro oil has Porsche A40 approval, so that would be my pick between the two. It also has MB 229.51 and BMW LL-04. But the oil costs more per qt than the full saps euro oil. Part because of the certifications, and part because the oil and/or ashless additives are higher cost.

The full-saps oil, while probably fine, does not have any official manufacturer approvals.

Some emission control systems require Mid or Low SAPS oils.

What does your manual cals for?

Porsche A40 or C30 spec.....

C30 is like VW504/507 (DPF oriented)

A40 is full saps

Exactly. Example: modern diesel engines with DPF.

Either would work well. The price difference isn't huge between M1 and AMSOIL Euro. Preferred customer pricing on the full saps AMSOIL is very good for a euro oil IMO.
