Which oils are good for a year?

My parents have a 99' Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with a bit over 13k miles. They currently drive less than 1800 miles per year, usually very short trips. Most of the time the engine never reaches operating temperature.

Are there any oils that can withstand this "severe" use with a once per year oil change?

Thanks,

Joe

I would recommend Pennzoil, Quakerstate, Havoline, Chevron, Valvoline, Mobil 1, Amsoil, Supertech, and O'Reilly motor oils for short driving amd OCIs. For the oil filter, I highly recommend Purolator, Proline, Mobil 1, K&N, Napa Gold, Wix, AC Delco (classic).

A synthetic should do the job. But find a way to take the car out for half an hour to an hour on the freeway every week or two.

I have an identical situation with a second car and have decided to take it to work once every two weeks instead of my primary car. That'll take it to 5k a year so one oil change per year on synthetic.

So there won't be an issue with the oil (or filter) degrading from just sitting there. I ask because some oils are marked as good for "X miles or one year" while others have no such designation.

BTW...I do try to take it on the highway a few times a month just to heat things up.

Just because an oil claims a mileage or time frame does not make the ones that do not have the claim unable to suit your needs. As a couple of others have said you can get away with almost any oil and filter. I would go to Wally and get 5 qts of Quaker State and a cheap filter and not worry about it till next summer.

So I asked a similar question a month or so back and you may want to review those answers. It wasn't as unanimous a yes as in this thread.

I had been changing every 6 months with MC Syn Blend and the engine is fine. Ford's recommendation for my driving was 3 months. I've upgraded to full synthetic, will be adding 2000 miles of highway driving, and am looking to change once a year at 5000 miles or so.

With only 1800 miles driven per year, wear is a non issue. I'd use one of the two most durable, sludge resistant oils that are available in all automotive departments. Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Protection or Shell Rotella 5w-40.

I had a similar situation a little while ago.

I used 0W-30 Amsoil and changed it every 3 months. I would take the car (Mitsi Galant 2.4 GDI) out every Sunday for about 40 mins to prevent coking up also.

However, I have done nearly 1000 miles in the past few days so that should counteract the lack of engine heating up.

Yes, due to very short daily journeys - less than 2 miles.

The short trips/not reaching op temp would be my concern with this . Personally I would change it at least every 6 months with just a good non synthetic oil .
