Ok - I am about to be driving 15,000 miles a year - up from about 5,000. Currently using the MC FL - 820S. Was considering the Wix but I have read some things here that seem to indicate some Wix are better than others. I can get them at O'Reilly's so that is easy to do. I use PYB at present. Which filter would you choose for 80% highway/20% city driving.

Pureone or bosch, I have seen the 820 perform well at 10k OCI also. All 3 are great filters and will perform whatever you throw at them

Nothing that I see on BITOG makes the Wix better than the FL-820S. I'd stick with the Motorcraft for normal drains of 5-7,500.

Wix
Purolator
Bosch

any one and you can't go wrong for now

filter makers are constantly going the cheap route with new models
just stay awake when you buy to make sure the ADBV has not changed
the center core is steel and the end caps are metal not cheap paper products
JMO

The bosch and P1 have some of the best beta ratios from what I have seen. Both are manufactured by the same company.

never been real impressed with WIX I got alot of startup noise in the past with them

I agree with the Bosch and Pure 1, but you could add the Mobil 1 filter to the list. Actually, I would be more concerned with your running PYB for 15,000 miles than the filter issue.

If you are going to stick with the 5000 mile oci, then stay with the MC FL820s. They seem to provide quieter start ups than some others, and are good oil filters for the money with up front bypass and good flow. The only reason I would switch to a filter that filters better, like the Bosch or PureOne is if I could get one of these two filters with an oil change special sale.

I think he means that he will be driving his car 15k miles per year, not the oci.

If you are sticking to a 5K OCI, save a buck and use an ST. Unlike the Purolator lobby, I am not panicking because one guy posted a bad report on the net.

I concur with this.

Nothing wrong with Wix, we use 'em all the time in our John Deere diesel stuff, but FL820S sure has been a top-notch performer for us over the years in Mod-motor Fords.

+1. I think this is the best advice. stick with the MC, or if you get a special on Purolator or Bosch that would be good too.

With your driving scheudle (80% Hwy), I would go to a 7000+/- OCI using either a Putolator PureOne of Bosch Premium filter. Both have good reputations and filtering ability. **Bosch is a clone of P1 and made by Pureolator.

Although MC Semi-Syn is a excellent oil, based on your driving situation, I would consider going to a full syn. This way you can go to a longer OCI (twice a year on 15,000K). Valvoline SynPower, Pennzoil, or Mobil 1 would all make good choices. A 5w30 or 10w30 would work well in your climate.

Just stick with your Motorcraft FL-820. It's built for longer drains.

Either keep using your Pennzoil, or if staying in the same price range, make a switch to Valvoline oils.

With one exception, son has used the MC FL-820S exclusively for 5k OCI's on his 4.6L Explorer since new. The one exception he got a start up rattle. I've cut a couple open, still have one, and they are well made with with a silicone adbv and thread end bypass. IMO, for 5k OCI's the 820 should be fine and for $3.64 at Wally and <$4 about anywhere, a good value. Longer OCI, P1 would be an option. But whatever you choose, stick with a filter with silicone ADBV.

If there's a purolator lobby, then you are most certainly the ecore lobby!!!

There are a lot of filters that can handle a 5k oci that don't have the risk inherent with ecores, all for the same price, or sometimes less.
