I've seen more with problems than without, including my Dad's 1978 Malibu wagon, neighbours Oldsmobile Tornado, neighbours Chev van...they got 'carboned up' always and just continuosly stalled out or wouldn't start.
Toronado's never had Chevrolet 305's from the factory, only Olds engines. That car probably had a 307 Olds if it was an 80's Toro. It is possible I suppose to have swapped a 305 in a Toronado, but you'd need a cutom made oil pan to clear the Old's front transaxle, and an adapter plate for the tranny since the trans has a different bell housing pattern.
That said, we've owned a number of 305's and all have been excellent. Don't forget that '78 was the first year for the new Malibu bodystyle. My brother still run's his '86 Cutlass Supreme with a 305 4bbl as his daily driver (essentially the same as a Malibu), with a few upgrades to the suspension and true dual exhaust. Handles great, good power and great gas mileage. Rust will kill that car before the engine dies.
