What would you consider the best oil in the world if you had to choose just one.

not much oil in truffles.

truffle oil is some other oil infused with truffles.

I've had truffled products twice in my life, and they are very, very memorable.

Johobba bean oil. Only about $40/quart. It beat M1 and Amsoil back in the mid 80's on one of those comparisons for flash and this and that. Properly additized.

other than that ...(hey, someone has to say it) D1 since I have seen no boutique oil in its class outperform it ...nor even match it for longevity and performance.

Right now I'm all about Toyota 5w30. Of course that might be because when I bought my new 4Runner I got 2 years worth of free oil changes.

We hear this from the newbies ALL the time in vintage and tube audio circles: which is the "best" sounding tube?

The answer is no different for motor oils - what is a perfect match in one engine may be entirely inappropriate in another. And there are many differing criteria for what is "best". So the ultimate answer is that many oils can be the "best" depending on the application particulars. And many can be the "worst", if in the wrong application.

What is "best" for my marine engines is not the "best" for my wife's or neighbors cars, or for my station wagon, or my R for that matter.

Different horses fof different courses.

In my road salt state of Michigan, it makes no sense to buy the best. Most oils on the UOA board with good analysis will get you 250K+. Unless you are a first & last vehicle owner & keep them until they're a rust bucket like here in Michigan where rust buckets are common-place, then any name-brand will likely get the job done for the extent of time you're driving/owning that vehicle.

There are a couple exclusive Super Tech dino oil users on this board approaching 250K. They pay around 99 cents a quart. I don't have the guts to go that route thou. I buy name-brand synthetics for my last two new vehicles..... Mobil-1, Citgo Ultra-clone (Auto-Trend) and Pennzoil Platinum.

No weenie wiggling, the question was 'if you had to choose just one'. Simple, either choose one and say why or don't choose.

One can often press a heavier oil into service in place of thinner one, an HDEO can replace a PCMO but typically not the other way around, so the choices drop dramatically. If a thinner HDEO is desired in place of Delvac 1 try XD3 0W40.

As stated in a similar thread over one year ago, my most memorable experiences have involved Kama Sutra oil.

Just Chose 1?
WELL since I have only used 2 my whole life.
WoW! I have lived a sheltered life!

My Grandfather and My Father and I, all would tell you the same thing.

Even though we all sell it, we don't preach it.
It normaly sells itself.

We have over 13 trucks and tractors and personal autos to prove that it is one of the best. 3 or 4 have over 400K miles and still running great!
2 i know of are close to 150K and still running like the day we drove them home. {Mind U all these autos-trucks and tractors are very well Maintained} WHICH IS THE KEY TO LIFE.

Granted this is Our Honest Opinion, and Opinions are a dime a dozen.

AMSOIL is our oil. {if we didn't have it we would say M1}.

U asked us to chose 1?
There is our 1.

I would say Amsoil, many great UOA's, it doesn't get modified often like other oils do(like green/gold and other changing oils).

My reasoning is this: It has many great UOA's, I like the fact that it doesn't get modified like other oils do(stable oil from a stable ethical company), it seems to be better according to the comments of others in terms of engine noise compared to some other oils. It seems to perform well with nice extended UOA's even without bypass filters where I'd want one. If it goes out of grade it goes up one, which I have no problem with.

However if the green GC was not modified and the company seemed less shady, or it wasn't a factor that I might not be able to find it in the future if I were to get some now, it would be the perfect oil. It really depends on how you interpret the question.

Hypothetical situation time
---------------------------
I'll call the perfect oil P-Oil: To me I would need it to circulate well in the cold. Protect well in extreme heat, which makes a Group 4 and beyond oil a P-Oil.
The next step is that it needs to perform well on an extended drain with better wear than other oils, hence Perfect oil.
It needs to leave nothing behind and it needs to be able to suspend enough to clean a decent amount of what was left behind from other changes.
It should have some form of cleaning and antioxidation additives, something that works like LC that is already inside the oil, I think it's a great idea, no?
P-Oil would need to be found in more stores than some of these localized oils, such as GC in Autozone.

When I get to thinking what is the best oil I always think of UOA's, extended drains, and a clean engine, and I expect a PAO oil or better.

Good criteria. Now which oil do you think exemplifies these traits to the best of your knowledge?

After 3 + years of being a BITOG member and learning more about oil then I ever imagined, I simply don't know. Let me see the new Amsoil line before I make a call.

i would stick with M1 5w30, but thats what i use in my stang. plus i can walk up the corner to costco and get 6 quarts for $24. however if it was more readily available i would use Amsoil or Redline.

From what I understand Fuchs Titan 5W20 is they most advanced PCMO available at the retail setting! I would happy though with Redline,Motul,Synergen or Delvac-1! When Molacule brings his oil to market I am sure it will be right up their with the best!!

I like moly in my oil, a very shear stable oil, and an oil that cleans/keeps an engine clean like crazy. The oil that meets that criteria and the oil that I will run from here on out (more than likely) is Red Line.

I think that HDEOs by design will do better long term than PCMOs as PCMOs are being designed primarily to address mileage and emissions attributes, so I'll pick a good HDEO. I need an HDEO for my truck anyway, so SURPRISE, the no brainer is Delvac 1 / Mobil 1 T&S.

I now have 100% Mobil 1 T&S in the older Taurus and it's running quieter, smoother, with slightly but noticeably more power than with the 10W30 PCMO that was in, and I know that it'll provide better cleaning and wear protection than most all PCMOs. From here on out the only use that I'll have for PCMOs will be for short interval cleaning and flushing.

Friends don't let friends drive with PCMOs.
