I’m looking for products that can barely pass API standards and/or are outclassed by “premium” conventional lubricants. Do they exist? Please list any examples that you are aware of!

Hate to burst your bubble, but even oils that “barely pass API standards” are still going to be statistically indistinguishable from other API-only oils, since they still meet the spec.
Maybe you should look for oils that have been red-flagged for failing PQIA tests?
