whatsup fellas?i haven't been on here for a while but i just recently purchased a new toyota tundra with the 5.7 liter v8.i was wanting everybody's opinion on the new castrol gtx 5w-20.i use castrol in my other machines with no problems but this new toyota is another beast altogether.it wasn't cheap and i want that 5.7 to continue to chew up the asphalt and dirt for decades to come.i read on another post that the castrol gtx 5w-20 is thicker than some other 5w-20's but that is ok with me due to better protection.anywho how does this oil stack up,as far as the additive package, sludge protection, viscosity breakdown,to other 5w-20's out there?
thanks,

I hold the opinion that there is very little difference between most oils on the market. It's mostly all about marketing. Most oils are using similar additive packages purchased from one of few suppliers out there.

Some are better than others in certain areas, but it's really impossible to know. I would go with a major brand that meets the specifications called for. As much as I dislike Castrol, GTX is a good oil.

Welcome to the forum!!!

You've had good luck with the GTX already.

Why not continue using it.

Synthetics also might be a good choice if you want to observe Toyota's recommended longer change intervals.

But if I'm pushing my new Tundra to 7500 miles between changes, I'd have Pennzoil Platinum in it.

Agree 100% here. I've had excellent results with Castrol myself and would run it no question...

As I would with Pennzoil YB, Halvoline, QS and so on....

Go for the first BOGO/rebate on YB, Valvoline or Castrol and follow your owners manual. If you want you could run synthetic in the winter just to get a little better cold flow and starter loop draw. Either way your Toyo will love you for stroking its drainplug regularly.....

Toyotas recommended OCI is 5000 miles or 6 months no matter the oil or service in the US.

While we get hundreds of thousands on miles on our Tundras and they are lucky to see 7-9k mile OCIs, we don't get a warranty so it really does not matter.

But if it was my personal vehicle, I'd stick with the 5k or 6 months just in case...

Have fun changing the oil. I have an 09 and take it to the dealer(Pennzoil). Why they designed the skidplate/cartridge filter location is a mystery.

I hear ya, my 02 Taco had the same deal. That front skidplate made accessing the oil filter a real pain!. It could be done, but was easier to drop the skid plate all together. (which in itself wasnt that easy. Anyway I used to buy Toyota brand dino, and Toy. oil filter from the dealership for my Taco. Although I dont what brand of oil it was, it worked fine!

A conventional can take an engine to 236,000 miles(based on my experience)as long as it's changed frequently. Synthetics should be able to take an engine further on less frequent changes.

My sister's 2001 Tacoma suggests you use Mobil 1 5w30 and Toyota filters every 5000 miles. 130K trouble free miles for her with no signs of letting up.

GTX is a great oil, use with confidence!! If you're going to go past the 5k mile OCI's consider running a synthetic or adding a quart or two of synthetic to your GTX fill to make your own blend!

There will be no real benefit running syn oils if you are doing 5,000 mile oil change intervals. The engine with proper care should last as long as it will last using any proper rated oil.

My 2005 Corolla with 140k suggests you use any SL/SM oil (I've used a lot) of any type (used both syn and mostly conventional) at 5k+ ocis as it has been trouble free and no signs of letting up.
